ART HISTORY 415G - Dr. Anna Brzyski
CARAVAGGIO & Elgreco Although I am not a particularly religious person, I have an immense amount of respect for Caravaggio and El Greco. Not only did they go against a lot of norms or standards of that time, but they broke some of the most fundamental rules of painting. For example, solid black is often considered to be a bad choice, compositionally, as it can make things seem flat. However, this is where tenebrism comes into play in the work of these two people: the almost solid black backgrounds create a weird negative space that allows the light to become more powerful. This has produced a huge effect on my ink drawings that are, perhaps, the darkest of all my work. I plan to do more work like this in the future.
