On May 26th, 2007 I was sworn in to fill a vacancy on the City Council. Having recently retired, I was contemplating some sort of community service when this opportunity arose. My experience on boards and committees has prepared me for this honor since I do understand good boardsmanship and the pitfalls of micromanaging. I ran unnopposed this past November in the General Election and was elected to a four-year term. I currently serve as Mayor Pro-Tem.
Michigan Apprenticeship Steering Committee, Inc.
Upon my retirement, I had served as Chairman of this committee for seven years. The Michigan Apprenticeship Steering Committee, Inc. (MASCI) is composed of representatives from labor, industry, education, government, and the public-at-large. The steering committee fosters, encourages, and promotes the awareness, establishment and improvement of sound apprenticeship and training programs to meet the needs of industry. We view apprenticeship as "that other" four year degree.
Some current MASCI projects...

Our web site became functional January 30th, 2001. Please take time to visit. The address is
www.aboutmasci.org.MASCI White Paper
Our committee has, upon the request of David Hollister, Director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth (MDLEG), identified the strengths and weaknesses and suggested specific changes needed in the roles and functions of all stakeholders in the apprenticeship and technical training community. Our findings were published in the white paper 'The Skilled Trades as Honorable and Respected Educational Options for the Citizens of Michigan' and presented to Director Hollister. Our findings are included as strategic policy recommendations in MDLEG's efforts to reshape Michigan's workforce development strategies.
Apprentice of the Year Awards
Each year MASCI chooses an apprentice from the building and construction trades and an apprentice from the industrial trades whose performance, work ethic, and community involvement personifies the dignity of a career as a craftworker. Winners are determined by criteria set by our awards committee. Winners receive a check in the amount of $1000 and a plaque identifying their accomplishment. Sponsors of the winners also receive a plaque identifying them as employer and/or union sponsors of quality apprentice training programs. Also, MASCI inscribes the winners' names on our traveling trophies, signifying them as winners for that particular year.
