Paige's mother was called immediatly. Everyone was given a chance to say goodbye. Then it was Matt's turn. Paige looked so pale, so weak and fragile. He sat next to her and took her hand. "Hey, how are you feeling?" "Terrible, like I just had a baby or something." Matt had to laugh. Even in her last moments she was joking. "What did they say, what's wrong with me?" "They said your going to be...."matt began to cry he buried his head in his hands. "I'm so sorry Paige. I'm so sorry." he sobbed, "It's OK. Really, we knew this day was going to come sometime, it's just come earlier for us." "How can you be so calm, I'm going to lose you." "Don't be selfish Matt," Paige snapped. "Think of our daughter. She's going to grow up without a mother and with Jeff for an uncle." "Don't joke, it's not funny." "I know, but what else can I do but wait for death." "I love you. With all my heart, I promise to bring up our daughter the best I can." Paige didn't answer. Matt carried on talking but paige wasn't listening. She had her eyes closed she felt warm. She could still hear Matt's voice, but now she was in a dark tunnel with a light at the end. Paige knew where she was going. She walked towards the light with Matt's voice getting fainter and fainter. Her Grandmother stepped out of the light. She smiled and nodded. Paige understood, it was time to say goodbye... |
