Romance in the Summer Holidays

Chapter 1

It was the 1st of August 2002 and the summer was hot. Three friends, Charlie, Philippa and Rory were sat together on a concrete block at the place were they spent a lot of their time, named ‘The Blocks’. They were talking about nothing in particular and just enjoying their 6 weeks of freedom from school, too soon they would have to return. Rory to year 8, Philippa and Charlie to year 10. That day they had, had a waterfight at Philippa’s house and were then letting their hair dry in the sun. They just got onto the subject of the latest big couple, Adam Farres and Claire a girl he’d met at a Party three days ago, when the sun disappeared and the sky became overcast with cloud. They decided to go into Rory’s house to play on his PS2 as they waited for the sky to clear. Half an hour later they went back outside and it was still very grey it had also become quite cold. That night they had planned to all stay at Charlie’s house, while her parents were in Leeds, so Philippa and Rory got their stuff and they set off to Charlie’s house before the heavens opened.

When they got there they found £50 and a note on the table, saying there was Vodka Ice, Beer, Cider and Barcadi breezers in the ‘Kid’s club’.

"Yes, money, alcohol and no parents. This is sooo cool!" Charlie said.

"Your parents are the best" Rory said sounding impressed

" They can be all right at times, I guess." Was Charlie’s reply.

They went and turned the television on for an hour before deciding to take the £50 to go to get a pizza and to go to Morrisons to buy buns, popcorn, chocolate etc. for a feast.

They then got back, ate until they were full, drank just enough to get slightly drunk but still be sober, then they started to wonder what to do next. Their decision was to go back out to the blocks seeing as it hadn’t rained after all and it was only 7 o’clock.

After they had been out for a while playing foul basketball, until Sam (Rory’s little brother) nicked the ball. They sat down and Philippa started to feel cold. So Rory, who fancied Philippa even though Charlie had told her he didn’t anymore so he and Philippa would stay friends, took off his hoodie and gave it to her to put on.

"If your cold wear this, it’s well good at warming you up." Rory said to her

" Thanks a lot that’s really sweet and I’m freezing." Said Philippa gratefully. They sat and talked until at about half past nine Philippa said to Rory.

"I wish you hadn’t stopped fancying me because I’d love it if we could try being a couple again." After what seemed like a very long minute’s silence. Rory said

"Flip, will you go out with me?"

" Yes, I will." Was Philippa’s happy reply.

That night whilst they were all staying at Charlie’s house Philippa and Rory hardly separated for more than a second holding hands and hugging at least every fifteen minutes. As their watches beeped twelve o’clock, Philippa and Rory kissed once gently, then again romantically.

It was the beginning of a new day, and the beginning of a new relationship for Philippa and Rory, once friends now much more.

Chapter 2

The next day at lunch Adam came out very happy, apparently he’d had a really good time at the cinema with Claire.

"We care because?" Charlie said blankly

"Ignore her, she’s just being bitchy" Rory said flinching as she got up to hit him. "So what happened?" Rory continued.

"First we went and saw the film. Then we went to Pizza hut and split a pizza and then I stayed at her house. Nothing happened though, unfortunately."

"Pig! You’re just like most lads. That’s all you think about getting off and sex." Charlie said angrily.

"Amen" chorused Philippa who’d recently broken up with her pig of a boyfriend, from Leeds, Alex. Who thought just like that.

"Chill out you two! Cool night then. We drank and ate loads and I even..." Rory stopped short seeing the warning look in Philippa’s eyes.

"Even what?" asked Adam inquisitively.

"Nothing, never mind." Rory said quickly.

"Strange! There’s a party on Wednesday night at my house you three coming?" Adam asked changing tone mid-sentence.

"Wouldn’t miss it. I’ve been waiting for a party." Said Rory excited.

"Us too" Said Philippa answering for her and Charlie.

Rory went, found the basketball and everyone out started playing a massive game. Charlie and Rory’s side won thrashing Philippa and Adam’s team by miles. Philippa started complaining about getting a cripple (Adam) and a Pie-boy (Lee) on her team. The debate soon finished and Philippa went off with Rory claiming she had to get something from her house. Charlie knew what was really going on and stopped Adam from following and being nosy.

Ten minutes later they re-appeared.

"Damn five minutes too short for the ‘Grease theory’." Adam said cheekily meaning the theory that said it only took fifteen minutes to have sex.

"Ha ha hilarious I’m sure." Said Rory sarcastically "but we do have something to say. Me and Philippa are going-out. Before over-exaggerated rumours start flying around." He said taking her hand as he said it. They went to sit down, still holding hands, as everyone but Charlie voiced their opinion. Charlie just sat and smiled slightly at the sight of them finally going out seriously, not like before, which didn’t last very long.

"And we don’t care what you have to say so don’t waste your breath!" Said Philippa strongly. So they all stopped talking about that and started talking about Adam’s forth-coming party.

Chapter 3

That Wednesday Charlie got ready at Philippa’s house after they’d been to York for the day. It was five o’clock and Charlie was ready, but Philippa was still messing about with one thing or another when there was a knock at the door.

"Charlie will you get that please it’ll be Rory no doubt. Tell him I’m not ready yet. You two can watch TV if you want." Philippa shouted from the bathroom.

"Ok but hurry up will you!" Charlie shouted in reply.

"Hi Percy. Come in. Pippa’s not ready yet. She said we should watch TV." Charlie said, calling him Percy like she often did because his surname’s Percival.

"Hi Dino. I was beginning to think I’d be stood on that doorstop forever, while you two shouted at each other." He answered calling her Dino because her surname’s Dean. He sometimes did this if she called him Percy.

"Hi Rory, I’ll be ready soon!" A voice floated down the stairs if you can call it floated when someone shouts at full volume.

"You look pretty cool. Not saying you don’t normally." Rory said to Charlie changing his tune as she threatened to hit him.

Charlie was wearing leather trousers, a grey leopard print top with leopard heads on it, a black glittery denim jacket and black high-heeled boots. Rory was wearing new mosher jeans, a new hoodie and his Quicksilver T-shirt with his normal shoes.

"You too, I suppose, but you could have worn something different to normal." Said Charlie half-heartedly.

"What’s up?" asked Rory sounding slightly worried, Charlie had a history for depression.

"Nowt. I just didn’t sleep well last night that’s all. Don’t worry yourself Perce"

Twenty minutes later Philippa emerged from her upstairs lair, leaving it in a right state of clothes and make-up. She was wearing tight black trousers, a white top with a pattern in silver glitter, a black jacket and black high-heeled boots.

"Ok we can go now!" she said cheerfully.

"It’s a good job you’re staying at my house tonight if the party ever ends. I doubt you’ll be able to get anywhere near your room never mind bed." He said looking upstairs and seeing the devastation. "Have you two got your stuff for staying over tonight?"

"Yes mother" Charlie said sarcastically and drearily.

"None of that cheek or you’ll be sent straight to bed without any supper." Rory said pretending to be a nagging mum.

"Are we going or are we just going to stand her playing families." Philippa said heading for the door.

"Ha ha. We’re coming." Charlie replied also leaving. Rory sighed, shook his head in a ‘What are they on?’ type way and followed closing the door.

Chapter 4

They were late arriving at Adam and Lee’s house due to Philippa’s failure to be ready on time. Sam, Liam (Rory’s brothers), Robert (Philippa’s brother), Matt and Claire were already there. Then Paul, Dale, Elliot, Josh, Melissa and Hayley, Adam’s friends that Charlie and Philippa didn’t know very well, arrived.

It was a small amount of people but there was enough food and alcoholic beverages for three times as many.

Five hours into the party Adam and Philippa were very drunk, Charlie and Rory weren’t drunk but weren’t all that sober either and hardly anyone else but Rob, who was well on his way to being drunk, had drunk anything.

"Rory do you want to, maybe, sneak off upstairs?" Philippa asked him with slightly slurred speech.

"Maybe another time. When you’ll actually be able to remember in the morning." He suggested sensibly. He didn’t want to sleep with her if she might regret it in the morning.

"At least kiss me!" She said not being the queen of subtlety at that point. They then disappeared into the garden for 20. Later insisting they only got off a few times no more happened.

The party went on until about 2 in the morning but some people left at eleven. Charlie and Rory helped Philippa back to Rory’s house at 1:45am.

"It’s a good job were staying at your house tonight. I doubt she’d make it home." Charlie said to Rory.

"I know what you mean I’m glad my mum’s out. I don’t know what she’d say to this but I doubt she’d be happy. I mean me and you are hardly stone cold sober either are we?" he replied tripping over a kerb.

When they got to Rory’s house they couldn’t be bothered to get changed. Philippa zonked out nearly straightaway and Rory and Charlie eventually fell asleep at god knows what time. They woke up at about 11:30am when the front door opened and Rory’s brothers came in with Rob to see if they could play Rory’s PS2.

"Can we go on your Playstation 2?" Liam asked nearly shouting.

"I guess so but be quiet! We’ve just woken up!" Rory said with a yawn.

"God, your lazy we got up at half nine." said Sam. They’d all stayed at Adam and Lee’s house last night and they never seem to need much sleep.

"What time is it?" muttered Philippa opening her eyes. "We didn’t sleep together, did we?" she quickly asked Rory remembering what she’d said the night before.

"Half eleven and no. You wanted to but I thought we better not seeing that you might regret it today." Rory answered blankly.

They got changed and went outside with Rory’s basketball to see who they could get to play.

"Where’ve you three been this morning?" Matt asked when they called on him.

"Asleep in my front room after getting in at about 2 this morning from Adam’s party." Rory replied sounding shattered.

That day nearly all that was talked about down at the blocks was the party and what people had said and done after other people had started to down the booze.

Closing note

Philippa and Rory broke up three weeks later but got back together a few months ago, they have now slept together and Philippa doesn’t regret it. Claire dumped Adam the day after the party when she remembered that he’d tried to speed things up and got a slap!
