If you've ever been out in Charleston, you've probably seen the Wormbelly stickers all over the place. Once again, the hype proves to be well-deserved. Wormbelly put on an amazing--and unusual--rock show. Dedicated fans filled The Reef and moved up right next to the stage, without any prompting from the band. For the most part, I sat in awe during their entire performance. First, the lead vocalist is very intense and emotional--coursing between intelligent, emotional lyrics and some serious snarling and growling. And not only was the vocalist noticeable, but the entire band showed off their instruments to the fullest. The drummer was the heartbeat of Wormbelly's music--he looked pretty damn happy during the entire set. The guitarists provided the backbone that brought the sounds together. And the sometime-keyboardist provided an almost ethereal element to the sound that really sets Wormbelly apart from the pack. Ah...and the reason that I say "sometime" keyboardist? Well, he switches between musician and entertainer, without missing a beat. During this particular performance, he appeared in a gas mask, jumpsuit, and various light fixtures, and undulated to the music in a surreal fashion. I have never seen anything like it. To pull it all together--Wormbelly is music for the next millenium.
