Susie Summers
Review
I can remember one of my first nights sitting at the quaint bar at what used to be Jack's Tavern on East Bay Street.  I was marvelling at the clock that never changed time, marking the supposed moment that Jack the Ripper's notorious killing streak began.

What made me look up from my musing was the booming voice of the woman sitting quietly near the front of the bar, and the twang of her guitar.  This woman was Susie Summers and I kept my eyes and ears fixed all night long.

Susie is somewhat of an institution in Charleston, although not one of those razzle-dazzle touristy ones.  She performs weekly in different intimate venues around town, giving audiences large or small an intimate show that they won't soon forget.  She is casual and neighborly, the consummate "bar" performer.  What makes her stand out is her voice.

Susie Summers sounds like Aretha and Janis taking a long, languid bath together.  Her voice is a dirty mixture of gravel and grit, with a core of molten lava.  She can grind and growl as only a true bluesy mama can, and she can twang and trill like a folk princess without missing a beat.

She also knows how to draw a crowd.  Susie is a pleaser not only for her voice, but also because of her range.  She has an audience request song list and is a virtual jukebox of an entertainer--from "Mustang Sally" to "Landslide," she keeps 'em coming.  You can catch her as a solo act, a duet, or even a trio, with a faithful crew to back her up.

Susie Summers is one of those working musicians that never looks bored.  She's a blue-collar singer with a high class voice. And, as I discovered that night at Jack's, that voice will surely pull you in.
