| My introduction to Charleston nightlife came via my friend Cyndee, a couple of Navy guys, and Steve Carroll & the Bograts. I came down to visit in November of 2001, and the rest is history. I'll spare you the details, but by the 2nd night of my visit, I was onstage, liquored up and singing "Brown-Eyed Girl" with the band. Although I still enjoy the occasional cameo, the real entertainment comes from the three guys performing in their famed corner of Tommy Condon's, flinging dirty jokes and good Irish sing-alongs. Steve Carroll & Bograts is the collective of John Holenko (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Teddy Prause (guitar, vocals, whistle), and, of course, Steve Carroll (vocals, bodhran, and general lasciviousness). Steve has been performing at Tommy Condon's for fourteen years, Teddy & Steve for ten, and the trio together for the past three years. They hunker down near the front window most Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and keep going until the crowd goes. I think the attraction in the group lies not only with their fun, but also with their familiarity. They have a fairly steady set list, which includes traditional Irish tunes as well as rock and roll, some revived folk songs, and even a country cover or two. Quite often you will find the same crowd week after week--drinking, singing (or shouting) along, dancing, and carousing with the band; but new fans are easily made. The Bograts are unapologetic and humorous about their catalogue of pub music, and nobody seems to mind. Even though many music "purists" shun "cover bands," Steve Carroll & the Bograts really do produce quality music for a damn good time. No thinking required. They encourage crowd participation (especially from the ladies), do a rousing rendition of "Dixie," and have a unique sound by using the bodhran (a traditional Irish drum that produces a large, hollow sound). It's easy to tell that they know what they're doing, and they are equally comfortable with ballads as with the Beatles. Traditional Irish music, loud rock and roll, and sass make Steve Carroll & the Bograts a must-see band in Charleston, just for the sheer fun of it. They also go well with a Black & Tan, in case you were wondering. |
