Review
Tanya and I ended up at Art's Bar by mistake--a schedule snafu and a need for a quick, cool one headed us in this direction.  Fate?  Quite possibly.

I handed my ID to the man at the door and almost forgot to get it back after spying what could only be Erik Estrada rocking it, CHiPS-style, in the tiny stage area.  Ample hair, aviator specs, and striped pants sealed the deal.  Damn, when did Erik Estrada learn how to sing like
that?

While it didn't turn out to be Mr.Estrada, it was one Andy from Moviestar, equally endowed with star-like qualities and charisma to boot.  Cracking jokes, improvising song lines ("waiting at the door cuz Art won't let me in"), and tilting his glasses, this lead singer owned the room like he ran the joint.  Luckily, his chutzpah was matched by his bandmates, fellow pranksters and gangsters of song Keith (guitar), Fred (drums), and Jason (bass).  Note how I didn't get their last names.  They were charging for that information, and Ionly had a dollar.  Better luck next time.

Last names aside, we could just call them Larry, Curly, Moe, and Shemp--Moviestar knows how to put together a damn clever song in both melody and lyric.  Their brand of rock is fun and frisky, without pouring on the
fromage.  Not many can get away with lyrics like "I'm only gay on the weekends," without sounding like Adam Sandler high on the marijuanakkah.  For all of their humor, Moviestar come off like a slightly more sane They Might Be Giants or a slightly more berserk Barenaked Ladies.  All of this is good.

So good, in fact, that they have had the big ones a-calling.  Andy informed me (mostly after I pried it out of him) that the band had some major record label interest a while back, and put in a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to make it happen.  Unfortunately, the deal fell through, the guys lost sight of the excitement, got stressed, and took a year hiatus.  Lucky for us, they're back, and "having fun"--enjoying the chance to goof it up and dazzle their fans without the pressure of the big dogs hanging over their shoulders.

Not that the chance isn't creeping up on them again--Moviestar is playing a December showcase at Arlene's Grocery in New York City--but they aren't sweating it.  Although Keith points out that he has "always wanted to do this," the guys in Moviestar are taking it slow and savoring the excitement of creeping back into the local music scene.

But, judging from their wit and panache, they might not be local for long...
