| When we interviewed Hazel Virtue at roughly 3:30 in the morning, we were shocked to hear that they have only been playing together for about nine months. (A really bad joke related to pregnancy just popped into my head, but I'll spare you...) I guess when it gels, it gels. Hazel Virtue is the kind of band that seems to have been around forever--they're good & they know it. They describe their sound as "pop rock," but I'd add a dash of funk, a speck of groove, and a strong dose of hard rock into the mix. This versatility works for several reasons. First, lead vocalist Eric Britt has the bark to back up their bite. He's a three-time BOC "Best Male Vocalist," and has the chops to prove it. At times he rolls into your ears like a sweet honey flow, and others--he's nipping at your ass like a dog in heat. Hence the versatility. In addition, adding to the powerful vocals are standout musicians. Shannon Woods (bass guitar) is featured in the current Charleston Free Times and damn well she should be--she is probably the most rockin' bass player I've seen yet. (Yes, I said "rockin'"). She's a tornado. I think it's quite the accomplishment to be a bass player and stand your own ground in a band, and Shannon clearly controls that rhythm with partner in crime, drummer Markus Kuhlmann. This dynamic duo can lay it down. The final component is Scotty Mitchell, rock guitar maestro. I don't think there are enough rock guitar solos in this world. I also don't think there are enough double-neck guitars in this world. Lucky for us, Scotty commands both. In the span of nine months, Hazel Virtue has become a great local rock band. They do mostly originals, with a well-chosen cover thrown in here and there ("Creep" was my favorite). Great guitar licks, a bass player that won't quit, and some sweet, slick, danceable rock and roll are what you're gonna get when you go to see them. They also throw a great party, but that's another story for another day... |
