| A) Exactamundo. B) Exact-O. C) Exactly. D) Exactus. And the winner is....D) Exactus! This talented six played a short but eccentric set at The Windjammer this past weekend and left me with a satisfied (or sassified?) feeling after I left. Once again proving that individuality, originality, and creativity are alive and well in the Charleston music scene, Exactus weaves a wicked tapestry of very original and very fun music. With lines like "I drink 'til she gets pretty" (from Exactus original "Drink til I get Dizzy") and and superstar dance moves, Exactus aims to please and tease. The guy standing next to me remarked that he got a Beck vibe from the set, but it might just have been vocalist/guitarist KB Reidenbach's superfly style. Their music is eclectic, but not in a world-vibe sort of way (although they do have some sassy conga playing going on). I would say that the guy next to me was on the right track with his Beck reference--Exactus definitely mixes it up and has a very experimental style--but not abstract-experimental like Radiohead--instead, their style is very danceable, with a quirky edge. There were rap, funk, driving guitar, dance, hip hop, and rock sounds all evident throughout the set. They even threw in Exactasized renditions of "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Billie Jean." You can hear Exactus on 96 Wave, and by the sounds of it, you will hear more of them in the future. This isn't your average rock band. Exactus is probably one of the most original and quirky group of musicians making the rounds in Charleston--they play often at Mandalay, as well as other spots around town, so head on out to see them. But don't actually get drunk til you get dizzy--the music will do that for you. |
