| Ahh...the mysterious name...and the rumours abound... Van Halen tribute band? Orwellian doomsayers? Eighteen year-old garage rockers? None of the above. Although they (sort of) explained the name to me, it's not at all relevant. Their music speaks for itself. Jason, Joe, and Neil (who was fixated on "protein" the night we met them...) have synthesized the past, present, and future of rock n' roll into a tight little package called 1984. They are a little raw and rough, but this works in their favor because 1984's sound is not formula. It's rock and roll...and "that's all it is," according to Jason (vocals/guitar). They reminded me of my uncle's rock band from the 70's (Light the Glass Tiger? Mom...a little help...), with some kick ass wailing vocals and sick guitar. And their drummer Neil? Like an octopus on speed. Must be all that "protein"... I really dug their opener, "Rock 'n Roll"--it was just that. The rest of the set was just as fast, fresh, and furious. I think that the youth of 1984, combined with their fun rock n' roll attitude, gives them a fresh take on music that's been around for decades. They have mountains of potential. 1984 is really just three guys out to play some rock 'n roll...and that's why they're so damn good. |
