Chapter 12

Sunday, November 12, 42 B.C.
3:00 p.m.
Rome, Italy

AFTER the blue light dissipated, Doc looked down to see if it worked. There it was the ancient city in all it’s glory. But when? Doc looked at the time indicator which read 42. But was it AD or BC? There was only way to answer that question.: Fly the limousine towards Calpurnia’s house to see whether or not she’s still alive or if the house is still standing. Doc steered the car towards the place and to his gratification it was still standing. But was Calpurnia still alive? Doc floated the car over the back to see if she was there. He saw a group of people there around the pool. Producing his binoculars, Doc looked down. There she was, among the servants holding a jar. Doc hovered the car over the area and waited until Calpurnia was alone before he could land nearby her.

++++++

Calpurnia held the jar containing Pricilla’s ashes saying “The child will be sent back to Hibernia where McFlius’s family resides. Meanwhile, Priscilla’s ashes will be sent back to Greece and her family.”

“At least the child will be raised by some relatives instead of strangers.” said Lorrainia who was holding the baby.

“That’s for sure.” said Calpurnia. She handed the jar to a servant saying “If everyone will excuse me, I would like to be alone.”

At that the servants bowed to their mistress and left.

++++++

Seeing Calpurnia being left alone in the pool area, Doc lowered the time limousine down in the back yard. After setting it down, Doc got out.

“Calpurnia.” he said.

Calpurnia turned to see who it was. It was Doc.

“Doctor Brown.” she said, “What are you doing here.”

“Calpurnia.” said Doc, “I need your help.”

“Doctor Brown.” demanded Calpurnia, “You dare…” And then, she looked around and just asked “What’s wrong?”

“It’s Jennifer.” said Doc, “She’s gone back in time to save McFlius.”

McFlius?” exclaimed Calpurnia, “Why?”

“Because he looks like Marty.” said Doc.

“So she saves McFlius.” said Calpurnia, “And Priscilla…” Then she looked at Doc and realized where he came from saying “On no! If that happens they will both be able to have another child or so. And only the gods, or as you would say only God knows what effect it will have on your history. And I owe too much already to allow that to happen.”

“Precisely.” said Doc.

“How can I help?” asked Calpurnia.

“As I understand, Jennifer was teaching you how to drive.”

“I know. But she got me as far as what you 20th Century people would call ‘the basics’.”

Doc tossed her the keys saying “Let’s see how much you remember.”

He guided her back to the spot where the limousine was parked but Calpurnia saw nothing.

“Where’s the time chariot?” she asked.

“Calpurnia.” said Doc, “You’re forgetting. It’s cloaked.”

“Oh yes.” said Calpurnia, “It’s designed so when you observed the past, the people of the past don’t observe you or your time chariot.”

“Correct.” said Doc, “Calpurnia, are you sure you still remember how much Jennifer taught you?”

“I’m positive.”

Doc reached out and opened the driver side door for Calpurnia who got in.

“You’re the boss.” he said.

After the door closed. Doc felt his way around the car to the passenger side and tried to open the door but it was locked. He reached into his pocket and produced the spare key to unlock it. After unlocking the door and opening it, he got in and closed it. Calpurnia did the same thing too.

“Alright, Calpurnia.” said Doc, “First of all we have to buckle our seat belt.”

“Seat…oh yes. The basics.” said Calpurnia. She buckled up the same way she did when she was time traveling.

“And now let’s see you start the car.” said Doc.

Calpurnia did. The car roared into action.

“It’s like what you future people say ‘riding a bicycle. Once you learn you don’t forget.” she said.

“Precisely!” said Doc.

Just then, they looked up and saw some of the servants come outside to see what the commotion was. Lorrainia was one of them.

“My servants.” said Calpurnia, “The must have heard the sound that this chariot makes when it starts up.”

“Quick, Calpurnia.” said Doc, “Activate the hover device.”

“But the brake is still on.”

“Don’t worry. It’s only used to prevent ground transportation.”

“But how do I activate it?”

Doc pointed to the marked buttons on the dashboard saying “Push one of these buttons.”

Calpurnia did. Unfortunately, it was the button to the cloaking device. Immediately the limousine became visible. Both time travelers looked up and saw the servants looking at them. Suddenly, the guards came out of nowhere armed with spears.

“Damn.” said Doc, “Calpurnia. You just turned off the cloaking device.”

“Oh dear.” said Calpurnia. She reached out to turn it back on but hit another button.

The car lift off the ground as Doc said “Now you’ve turned on the hovering device.”

“Well which one is the cloak button?”

“This!” said Doc as he pushed a button.

Both time travelers looked down and saw the servants and soldiers stare upward in awe. And then they saw Lorrainia feeling faint being caught by someone. And then out of nowhere two other people appeared. After some instructions from Doc Calpurnia steered the car towards these two people and they turned out to be McFlius and Priscilla with the wife holding the infant.

“Jennifer.” said Doc, “She’s saved McFlius. And now the ripple effect has begun.”

He reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a Polaroid camera and started taking pictures.

Meanwhile Calpurnia looked down and said “They make good parents. It’s a pity that we must let them both die.”

“We have no choice, Calpurnia.” said Doc, “If they live long enough to have another child, only God knows what might happen in the future.”

Doctor Brown was right. As far as Calpurnia was concerned, the most formidable foe in stopping Jennifer from saving McFlius would be her own emotions. And in order maintain future events as Doc would know it, McFlius and Priscilla must both die. There was no right or wrong about it. It was just a fact of life and she knew it.

Doc set the circuits for October 10, 42 B.C. 8:00 am and the place Philippi, Macedonia and activated the time circuits.

“Alright, Calpurnia.” he said, “Let’s see you try 90.”

He supervised Calpurnia’s footwork on the pedals and it seems that Jennifer had taught her well. Before long the limousine accelerated up to 88 mph and through the time barrier

Monday, October 10, 42 B.C.
8:00 a.m.
Philippi, Macedonia

When the light dissipated, the two time travelers found themselves over the plains of Philippi. Doc got out his infrared visor and scanned the field.

“There!” he said pointing to a spot.

Calpurnia steered the car towards the spot that Doc pointed too.

And then, Doc said “Now Calpurnia, I’m going to instruct you on how to land the car.”

Following Doc’s instructions on what buttons to push, Calpurnia manage to land the car after a few scary moments of course.

She exhaled as Doc said “You’re an excellent student, Calpurnia.”

“I watched Marty, Jennifer, Clara and you land these chariots.” said Calpurnia, “But I never dreamt that I would try out something like this.”

“But you did.” smiled Doc, “And for the business at hand.”

Handing Calpurnia another infrared visor, the two time travelers got out and approached the invisible DeLorean.

When they arrived, Doc said “Alright Jennifer. Your visit here to the past is over. Now open up or we will.”

There was no response from inside the invisible car so Doc produced his key to the car’s door and unlocked it.

Peering in, he said “We’re too late. She’s gone!”

“But where did she go?” asked Calpurnia.

There was the sound of a battle in the distance. It was the battle of Philippi in which Brutus and Cassius would meet their fate.

Doc produced the spare ignition key to the DeLorean and handed it to Calpurnia saying “Take the DeLorean and scan the area.” Giving her one of the Polaroid pictures for her to use, a photo of Jennifer’s break-in taken by the security camera, and another sleep inducer in case she resists,  he said “Take these as well.”

“Roger.” said Calpurnia.

“We’ll keep in touch with these.” said Doc handing her a walky-talky, “I’ll take the limousine and we’ll split up.”

“I read you, Doctor Brown.”

As both got into their respective cars, Doc said “We’ve got a mission to accomplish.”

Afterwards, both time travelers closed the doors and headed off towards the field of battle.

++++++

In the mist of battle, Brutus heard a familiar voice.

“Brutus!”

Turning around, he saw McFlius with a sword.

“Prepare to meet your end.” he went on to say.

“I always wanted to make meatballs out of you.” said Brutus as he turned his sword to McFlius.

“That’s mincemeat.” said McFlius, “‘Make mincemeat out of you.”

At once the swordfight was on.

++++++

Jennifer was at the edge of the field of battle when she produced her binoculars. Scanning the field she spied McFlius engaged in a battle with someone bearing the resemblance of a Tannen.

Biff? she asked herself. Then she remembered what Marty told her: Brutus looks a lot like Biff.

Combing through one deserted foxhole after another, she got closer. And then, she spied a body of a man with a crossbow barely out of reach of his outstretched arm. Jennifer crept forward to pick it up. When she did , she crept slowly towards the two combatants.

++++++

Suddenly, Brutus had the upper hand. He knocked McFlius to the ground and prepared to behead him when suddenly an arrow struck him in the heart.

++++++

The arrow came from Jennifer.

She reloaded again saying “Forgive me, Lord.”

And then she fired. Brutus fell to the ground.

And then, a voice asked “Where did that arrow come from?”

Then, another said “Look a girl with a crossbow. Where did she come from?”

And yet another said “After her.”

Jennifer looked around and then fled.

++++++

Calpurnia was nearly close to the field of battle when she saw an army of soldiers chasing after someone. Taking out some binoculars, Calpurnia used them to see who it was. It was Jennifer.

Producing the walky-talky, Calpurnia said “Doctor Brown, I’ve found Jennifer.”

“Good.” said Doc’s voice, “What’s she doing?”

“She’s being chased by some soldiers.”

“Great Scott! Calpurnia, you’ve got to rescue her without risking your life.”

“But how?”

“Use your imagination.”

Calpurnia looked down saying “Alright, I’ll try. Calpurnia over and out.”

Putting away her walky-talky, Calpurnia steered the car and started towards Jennifer until she was right overhead her.

++++++

Jennifer was nearly out of breath when she heard the sounds of honking car horn.

A car horn in 42 B.C.? she asked herself, But it can’t be. The only car here is the DeLorean and I have it. That could mean…

“Jennifer.”

She looked up to see who it was. It was Calpurnia. Her head was sticking out in thin air.

“Calpurnia!” said Jennifer, “What are you doing here?”

“No time to answer you.” said Calpurnia as she seemed to get closer to her. And then, she extended her and out to her saying “Take my hand.”

Jennifer extended her arm out Calpurnia saying “Get closer.”

Just then, Calpurnia looked behind her and said “Jennifer, look out behind you.”

Jennifer did. There was a spear heading in her direction being thrown like a javelin. Jennifer screamed and immediately ducked.

++++++

The soldiers were upon their prey when out of nowhere was this head of a woman being suspended in thin air.

“Hey.” she demanded, “Is that any way to treat a lady?”

The soldiers dropped their weapons in awe. What kind of madness were they witnessing?

++++++

Satisfied, Calpurnia lowered the DeLorean with the passenger side facing Jennifer. She opened the door saying “Get in.”

Jennifer did. She looked around. It was the inside of the DeLorean.

“Calpurnia.” said Jennifer, “This isn’t the DeLorean that Doctor Brown left behind in the catacomb is it?”

“No, Jennifer.” said Calpurnia, “This is the DeLorean that you came in.”

“But how did you know I came in it?” asked Jennifer.

Calpurnia ignored her producing the walky-talky and talking into it.

“Doctor Brown.” she said, “I’ve got Jennifer, over.”

“Doctor Brown here.” said Doc’s voice, “Good Calpurnia. Now meet me back at the rendezvous point where we first found the Delorean.”

“Roger, Doctor Brown.” said Calpurnia, “Calpurnia over and out.”

“Doctor Brown is here?” asked Jennifer, “But why and what’s your involvement?”

“We’re here to stop you from saving McFlius’s life.” said Calpurnia.

McFlius?” exclaimed Jennifer, “Calpurnia. I’ve got something to say.”

But before she say anymore, Calpurnia whipped out the sleep inducer Doc gave her and used it on Jennifer.

“You could tell us later.” she said.

She steered the car back to the rendezvous point.

++++++

After the girl disappeared, the soldiers stood there in complete shock.

Then, one of them said “We’d better not report this to our superiors, they’ll cut off our ration of wine.”

The other soldiers could not disagree.

++++++

Doc just arrived back at the rendezvous point when Calpurnia did. They both got out of their respective cars as Doc approached the DeLorean.

Seeing Jennifer lying unconscious inside, Doc got in and set the time circuits.

“Alright, Calpurnia.” said Doc, “I’ve set the time circuits for April 3, 1988 1:33 a.m. That’s the time she left. You’ll return her to that precise moment. It’ll be like she never left. And I’ve set the destination circuits Hill Valley, California and the destination map for Jennifer’s house.”

Doc got out and Calpurnia got back in.

“What about you, Doctor Brown?” asked Calpurnia.

“Check Jennifer to see if she got any other keys.” said Doc.

Calpurnia did. She frisked Jennifer’s pockets and her purse and came across some.

“Here’s some.” said Calpurnia.

Doc took a couple of them and gave the rest back to Calpurnia saying “I’ll take these keys. They’re the keys to her car. The rest are the keys to her house in case her bedroom window is closed. Make sure you still have the sleep inducer with you in case you wake her parents. Meanwhile, I’ll take the limousine back to the same time and go pick up Jennifer’s car.”

“I read you.” said Calpurnia.

“I’ll drive back in Jennifer’s car and leave it off at her house and then I’ll pick up and take you back to your own time.”

“That sounds good to me.”

After this, both time travelers got into their cars, activated the time circuits and accelerated up to 88 miles per hour and into the time barrier.
