This letter speaks by itself.
A million thank you to the superb lady who went to all that trouble and would not accept even a box of chocolate.
Charles Mill.
Here she goes:
Dear Charles,
I made it to Elgin library today and made some notes on the Clappertons.
Gravestones in Bellie (which surprised me, since this is the parish church
burial ground and I didn't expect to find Roman Catholics buried there)
No 387: "Erected by James Clapperton, merchant in Fochabers in memory of his
wife Margaret Geddes who died 7 February 1814 and his children Arthur, died
1 April 1839; John, died 11 September 1839; Henry, died 18 September 1840;
Barbara, died 2 November 1846. His second wife Barbara Paterson who died 13
August 1852. His son Charles, died 25 October 1872. The said James
Clapperton, died at Fochabers 13 October 1875."
No 388: "Thomas Clapperton of Potterton, died at Fochabers 19 May 1899 aged
75. Mary Martin his spouse died at Potterton House, Aberdeenshire on 16
April 1921 aged 77."
No 389: "Erected by Catherine Kelly in memory of her husband Alexander
Clapperton who died at Fochabers 6 December 1886 aged 59. The said Catherine
Kelly died at Fochabers 28 November 1888."
Then I looked in the index and found the following. (The ones on the stones

Well, that was a marathon and a half. I see I forgot to look
up the
gravestone in Chapelford (the Roman Catholic cemetery near Buckie). Also I
did not look at all the newspaper articles, the register of baptisms (Church
of Scotland or Roman Catholic) or the Census. If you want copies of the
newspaper articles or the police books (ZBEL) or Poor Relief (ZPEL), you
should contact Graeme Wilson, Local Heritage Centre, Moray Council, Grant
Lodge, Cooper Park, Elgin, Moray IV30 1HS, telephone 01343-563413,
. There is a charge for copying any material. If you want me to look up the baptisms and the Census,
please let me know.
Feel free to ask any supplementary questions in case any of the information
is not clear.
Incidentally Graeme would welcome any information about the Clappertons who
went to Canada; he will add to this index any information about anyone with
a connection to this area.
Hope this helps.
Anne (Burgess)
Note from C.Mill,
I do not know the people listed below . It does not mean that
they are not related to us.
I leave them on this page so they will be a starting point, if somebody (or
myself) at a later date want to look them up in the church registers of the era,
(and god forbid, I could have made a
mistake)
