Miscellaneous Andrews information

When I first began working on my husband's Andrews family, I looked through
all of the data I had, and it was obvious that there were many conflicts.
So, beginning with our direct line, I have tried to sort through the court
records, etc. to try to figure out the reasoning. I think the lightbulb
came on about two days ago, as to why there is so much conflicting
information. I think a great deal of it revolves around the fact that many
of the researchers were totally unaware of the will of William Andrews, who
wrote his will in 1770, and was married to Avis.

For years, several of the children of this couple have been well known, as
they were listed in the Bristol Parish register. These were:
Ephraim, George, Winifred, Avis, John, and Luciana.

In some of the older research done on the Andrews family, this was all they
had to work with, as William's 1770 will was not available in regular will
books. Fortunately, the will information is now available. If you compare
the list of children, it is much different. Instead of 6 children, there
were at least 11 children. The will also included:
William, Thomas, Abram (Abraham), Richard, and Mark.

If you set out to research this family, and knew nothing about those
additional 5 children, consider how different your results might be. It
wouldn't be your fault, as you would be trying to sort things out with the
available information you had at the time. I think that some of the errors
in the Andrews research are based upon this one missing piece of the puzzle.
---------------------
Consider the son, William. The will gave us the information that he had
sons Ephraim, David, William, and Varney. Also that he was married to a
woman named Ann.

If you didn't know about this William, but you knew that Varney was the son
of "a" William, you would begin searching out all of the Williams you could
find. Much of the data links Varney Andrews to William, the son of Richard
and Mary Andrews. This couple had children: Isham, Francis, William,
Henry, and Phoebe. (Perhaps they had more, but this came from birth
records).

When I was trying to sort out the children of Richard Andrews, I thought
this will below might be his son, William. (There were wills for William,
Isham, and Francis fairly close together in time in Chesterfield Co., and
they were living in the same area as their father, Richard).

Will Book 5, page 249. Will of William Andrews, Sen'r.
Son, Bolling, tract I live on, 100 acres.
Daughter, Kiziah Andrews
Execs: Sons, Randol and Aaron
Dated 2 January 1799
Wit: Isham Dyer, Dan'l Dishman, Phebe Dyer, David Johnstone

There is no Varney named. A lot of data shows that Varney also had brothers
named Ephraim and William, but there is also no Ephraim named in the above
will, and no William. But by ruling out all of the other Williams in this
area, and not knowing about Wm. and Avis's son, the only one left that would
have been even close to the proper age was William, son of Richard.
Unfortunately, they did not know about William, the son of William and Avis.
But if you were doing the research today, and had this additional piece of
information, which would you choose for the father of Varney, Ephraim, and
William? (Willliam's 1770 will does mention a son, William and Wm. Jr's
sons, Ephraim, Varney, David, and William).
-------------------------------
Another big conflict was with Richard, the son of Thomas Andrews. Almost
all of the data has him dying in 1752 in Lunenburg Co. Not sure how that
date came about, as I could find no probate records in the county for
Richard. I also think that I have proven that Richard stayed in
Henrico/Chesterfield. Found him as late as 1756, and while he was in
records there, there was another Richard in Lunenburg during the same years.

If you check the records, most of William and Avis's children moved to the
area of Mecklenburg/Lunenburg, and were living on the land he patented in
1750. It seems fairly certain that the Richard living there, along with the
other Andrews children, was William and Avis's son. But, if you didn't have
the will information, you might not even be aware that William and Avis had
a son by the name of Richard. So, without that puzzle piece, you would look
around for another convenient Richard. The son of Thomas Andrews was
selected. I think that's how that piece of data was thought out.

It might be a good idea to check back over your data. Think back over the
available records we have today, and see if you come up with a different
conclusion. Perhaps it's time for an update.

In referring to the will of William Andrews, who wrote his will in 1770,
Dinwiddie Co., VA.

Item: I give and Devise unto my Daughter Winiford Granger one hundred and
thirty five acres of land lying on the North side of Meherrin River at the
Lower part of my Land there being the Land whereon she now lives which said
Land I give to her and her Heirs forever.

Item: I give unto my son Abram Andrews one hundred and thirty three acres
of Land on the North side of Meherrin River in the middle of my Land thereto
to him the said Abram his Heirs and Assigns for ever.

Item: I give and Devise unto my Daughter Lucy Andrews the Remainder part of
my land lying on the North side of Meherrin River the aforesaid containing
by Estimation one hundred and thirty-three acres more or less lying at the
upper part of my said Tract.
---------------------------------
This land can be traced back to a patent (Patents 30, p 159), dated 12 July
1750, to William Anders, Lunenburg Co., VA. 400 acres. On the north side
of Meherrin river, and on Beaverpond Creek.
---------------------------------
When William wrote his will he left this land in Lunenburg Co. to these
three children - Winifred Granger, Abram (Abraham) Andrews, and Lucy
Andrews.
----------------------------------
In determining Winifred's husband, there were a few Grangers in the
Lunenburg Co. area records, but the primary one was John Granger. This John
Granger has long been thought to be the son of Benjamin and Anne (Andrews)
Granger. Anne mentioned her son, John, in her will in Chesterfield Co.,
dated 26 Nov. 1784. She also mentioned a grandson, Absolom Granger. She
made a daughter the Executrix, not John, the son. Perhaps this was because
he had been living in Lunenburg Co. for years.

We find John Granger in Lunenburg Co. at least as early as 1755, when he
bought additional land. (Wm. Andrews had the land as early as 1750, so
Winifred may have been living on her father's land for many years before he
died).

*This places Granger on Beaverpond Creek, and also places him living next to
Abraham Andrews and Peter Andrews. (I'll get to him later).

Granger, John 12-10-1793; 1-9-1794; W.B. 4/43-4
Mentions: Wife: Agnes Granger
Sons: Annenias Granger, John Granger, Benjamin Granger
Daughters: Lucretia Granger, Bray Granger, Laurania Granger,
Polly Granger, Avis Wills and her children
Grandsons: Moses Granger, Annenais Granger
Executors: Benjamin Gee, Jr., Benjamin Andrews, Drury Andrews
Witnesses: Peter Garland, Nevil Gee, Curtis (?) Hardy.
*Note: This shows wife, Agnes, the woman he married only twelve years
earlier. We know John had to have been married previously, since he names
grandsons in the will. Notice the name of daughter, Avis. She must have
been named after her grandmother, Avis (m. to William).

*Note: (This from a Granger researcher: John made no mention of his son
Absolom in his will; however, Absolom inherited land from his grandmother,
Anne Granger in Chesterfield County upon her death in 1784. He sold this
land sometime afterward and removed to Georgia with his wife and family
prior to 1803. It was the custom in those days, that when a son came of
age or married, his father settled his portion upon him at that time. This,
in all probability, was what occured in Absolom's case, and since he was far
away in an unsettled land, was not mentioned in the will).

*Note: Annanias named a daughter Winifred Andrews. This daughter
would have been named after Annanias's mother, Winifred (Andrews) Granger.

I was fortunate enough to find the last necessary piece of the puzzle to
show John Granger's first wife beyond any doubt. This deed was done after
William's will was written. Although John and Winifred were living in
Lunenburg Co., on Beaverpond Creek, they were selling some land they also
owned in Mecklenburg Co.

Mecklenburg Co, VA Deed Book 3, p. 29, February 22, 1771 from John Grainger
and Winifret, his wife, of Lunenburg County, to Bartholomew Crowder of
Mecklenburg, for 30 pounds, a certain tract of land in Mecklenburg, about
104 acres bounded by a corner between Crowder and Cooper, Arnold. Signed:
John (his mark) Granger.
Witnesses: Ruben Vaughan, Joseph Kelley, James (his mark) Johnson.
Recorded March 11, 1771. At a court held for Mecklenburg on June 9, 1777.
Winifred, the wife of John Grainger, relinquished her right of dower.

The relationship here:
Thomas Andrews, d. 1731
William Anne Granger brother & sister
Winifred m. John cousins
-----------------------------------------------
Abraham Andrews also inherited some of the land on or near Beaverpond Creek.
And he also purchased more.

Deed Book 12, p. 534. Abraham Andrews bought 200 acres from Francis Cooper.
Mentions ? Branch called Little Beaver Pond, Haggard's Mill Path,
Van___line, Neval G___ (probably Gee). 1777. (This would have been after he
had already inherited land from his father.)

Deed Book 14, p. 220. Abraham Andrews bought 200 acres. Mentions creek
called Beaver Pond, John Grainger's line, Robert Floyd's line, Abraham
Andrews' land, Peter Andrews' corner & line. 1785
*Note: Places Abraham living next to his deceased sister's husband, John
Granger, and also next to Peter Andrews (next).
----------------------------------------------
Lucy Andrews also inherited some of this same land from the patent on
Beaverpond Creek. If you go through the deeds of Lunenburg Co., you will
find entry after entry of three main people living near each other, and on
this Creek. They were John Granger, Abraham Andrews, and Peter Andrews.

When William wrote his 1770 will, the daughter was Lucy Andrews. She either
had to be still single, or had married an Andrews. I think that Luciana
(Lucy) Andrews was married to Peter Andrews. Peter Andrews was the son of
John Andrews of Chesterfield Co.

1764 (before the 1770 will)
Thomas Andrews ............................... 1 280
Richard Andrews .............................. 1
Peter Andrews ................................ 1 333
John Granger ................................. 1 344
(This would include two sons of Willliam's, and two daughters with their
husbands. Probably all living on William's land, and there had been
additional purchases).

1783:
Andrews, Abraham
Thomas Andrews ..................... 5 11 2
Andrews, Peter ....................... 2 8
Grainger, John
Annanious Grainger ................. 3 7 4
*Note: This is after the 1770 will, and now there are only three of the
Andrews children left, and they were the ones that inherited the Lunenburg
Co. land...... Abraham, Lucy (m. to Peter Andrews), and Winifred (m. to John
Granger), although Winifred is deceased by this time.

13. Andrews, Peter 1-8-1810; 4-12-1810; W.B. 7/4-5
Mentions: Wife: Lucy Andrews
Son: Drury Andrews
Daughters: Nancy Massey, Amey Gill, Winifred Evans,
Milley Andrews, Lucy Evans
Grandsons: Peter Massey, Thomas Massey
Granddaughters: Elizabeth Evans, Polly Massey, Lucy Massey,
Nancy Massey
Son-in-law: Thomas Massey
Executors: Philip Gill and Alexander Andrews
Witnesses: Reuben Gee, Lawry Andrews, Abraham Andrews.
*Note: Notice wife is named Lucy. I think this is Luciana, daughter of
William and Avis Andrews. Also note that there is a daughter, Winifred, who
might have been named after her Aunt Winifred Granger, who was living near
this family.

The relationship here:
Thomas Andrews, d. 1731
William John brothers
Luciana m. Peter cousins. Again, we find cousins marrying.

In conclusion, I think that Winifred, daughter of William and Avis, married
John Granger, son of Benjamin and Anne (Andrews) Granger.
I also think that Luciana Andrews, daughter of William and Avis, married
Peter Andrews, the son of John Andrews of Chesterfield Co.

There has been quite a bit of discussion over the past few weeks about Avis
Garnett, daughter of Thomas Garnett..... and who she married. There are
many unverifiable sources or second-hand sources, stating that she married
William Andrews, who d. about 1772 in Dinwiddie Co., VA. Often this
unverified information is copied and passed along again, and again.
Remember, just because you have seen it over and over does not make it
correct. It is important to ask for sources, and use original records to
verify whatever you find. Do not accept what has been spread around without
documentation. I think you will find this lack of verification against
original records is why the wife of William Andrews d Dinwiddie has been
erroneously recorded as Avis Garnett again and again on many webpages and
family group sheets. The wife of William Andrews d Dinwiddie can be
documented as Avis, but there are no records proving that William Andrews'
wife Avis was Avis/Avey Garnett. On the other hand, there are records that
indicate William Andrews' wife Avis was not Avey Garnett.

--------------------
Other souces have Avis/Avey Garnett, daughter of Thomas Garnett, married to
Mark Andrews of Essex Co., VA. There appears to be excellent documentation
supporting this marriage. The same documentation disproves any possibility
that Avis Garnett, daughter of Thomas Garnett, was the wife of William
Andrews d Dinwiddie.
--------------------
Let's begin with Avey Garnett, daughter of Thomas Garnett, as a child,
mentioned in her father's will. He refers to his several small children,
and desires the wife to see to their care. This will was written in 1733.
------------------------
Thomas Garnett, Son of John Garnett, Sr. of Gloucester County
Recorded in Will Book 12, page 191
Essex County Circuit Court -- Will Book 7, page 60

In the Name of God Amen.

I, Thomas Garnett, of the Parish of St. Anne in the County of Essex being
sick and weak but of a disposing memory do make this my last will of
Testament,
forsaking and disallowing any will or testament heretofore by me made and
this and no other to be taken for my last will and testament in manner of
form following, viz: It is my will and desire having SEVERAL SMALL CHILDREN
that my loving wife Elizabeth have the use of all my estate be it of what
nature kindsoever for and during her natural life provided she remains my
widow for and towards her support and my said children: John, Anne, Sarah,
James, Joyce, Mary, AVEY and Thomas Garnett, but in case she should marry
than (sic) it is my will and desire that all my estate be equally divided
between my loving wife, and my children above named and it is further my
will and desire that if my loving wife Elizabeth shall remain my widow
during her natural life that then (sic) all my estate with the increase or
decrease at the time of her death be equally divided between my above named
children:
John, Anne, Sarah, James, Joyce, Mary, AVIE, and Thomas Garnett. And it is
my Desire that my Estate be not appraised, and do appoint my loving wife
Elizabeth sole Executor of this my last will and testimony in testimony
whereof I have set my seal the 20th of February 1733.

This Garnett family lived in Essex County. There was an Andrews family
living in the Essex Co. area. There is a Bible record, linking the
Garnett family to the Andrews family:

this family).

Mark Andrews Departed this Life the 20th day of January 1775
---------------------
Thomas Garnett wrote his will in 1733. That means that if his young
daughter, Avey Garnett, is the same Avey that married Mark Andrews, she was
about two years old when her father died. That agrees with the reference
to Avey Garnett as one of the "small children" in Thomas Garnett's will.
Ave, wife of Mark Andrews, died in 1768 according to the Bible record.

Notice that one of the children of Mark Andrews and Ave was named GARNETT
Andrews. This further supports the evidence that Thomas Garnett's daughter
Avey Garnett was the wife of Mark Andrews.

==============================
Let's now look at Avis, the wife of William Andrews.

Ephraim Andrews' birth in 1721 to William Andrews d Dinwiddie and wife Avis
was 12 years before Thomas Garnett wrote his 1733 will naming daughter Avey
as one of his small children. Avey Garnett who was still a small child in
1733 certainly could not have been the mother of Ephraim Andrews. Ave, wife
of Mark Andrews, who was no doubt the same as Avey, daughter of Thomas
Garnett, was not born until 1731.

Avis Andrews, wife of William Andrews was still alive in 1774.
According to Mecklenburg Co., VA. Deed Book 4, p. 335: "Avis Andrews of the
County of Dinwiddie, widow and relect of William Andrews late of the said
county, deceased" sold unto her son, Ephraim Andrews...." Recorded 1774

(Ave, wife of Mark Andrews, died in 1768)
--------------------------
Consider William the husband of Avis.
If you have a map of Virginia, Essex County is a long way from
Henrico. Thomas Andrews, (d. 1731), father to William Andrews, patented
land in Henrico in 1704. He is in Henrico as early as 1690 giving a
deposition. Since we believe our Wm. was born about 1693, he must have been
born in Henrico. None of the material indicated that the Garnetts moved to
Henrico, and there is no evidence that William Andrews or his father Thomas
Andrews ever moved to Essex Co. Therefore, it seems unlikely that
William Andrews of Henrico, Prince George, and Dinwiddie, and Avey Garnett
would have married.
====================
In reviewing the information, Thomas Garnett mentioned small children in his
1733 Essex Co. will, Avie being one of the children. This would rule her
out as the wife of William Andrews of Dinwiddie, since his wife was already
having children over a decade earlier in time.

William Andrews was not living in Essex Co., where Avie Garnett was living.
Mark Andrews was living there. There are Bible records listing birth and
death dates of Mark Andrews and Ave Andrews, along with their children. One
of the children was named Garnett Andrews. The William Andrews in Dinwiddie
had no children carrying forth the Garnett name.
----------------------
Several of us have been gathering information in order to verify, or refute,
the maiden name of Garnett for Avis, who m. Wm. Andrews. We believe, based
on good documentation, that her maiden name was not Garnett.

No records have been found proving the family of William Andrews' wife Avis,
but she was probably from the Henrico (later Chesterfield) or Prince George
(later Dinwiddie) area.
