This one black boy kept coming to Carla at the funeral and seemed particularly upset The child went to school with Andy and the children in his school wrote letters and gave them to Carla When Carla read this little boys letter It started with Andy was my best friend ( like most of them did) and went on to say as most of them did about how sorry he was and missed Andy then there was a space and then one more line written , It said " You were my only friend" I do not know why this little boy did not have any more friends but I do know that my grandson saw past the race barrier and past whatever it was about this little boy that made no one else want to be his friend and saw that he was worthwhile and WAS his friend . Knowing this about Andy makes our hearts swell with pride . He was what we wished for with our children and our grandchildren He was a decent and kind person who looked beyond stereotypes and to the person's heart. This showed in the attendance at his funeral... there were over 500 people white,, black, mexican,rich people, poor people , and a whole mix of family from divorced and remarried backgrounds , all united with no animosities for one reason to pay their respects to this boy who had touched their hearts. May we each strive to be more like he was.
