Some documents pertaining to work at the Imperial Institute of Higher Education
(Validated Centre of the  Federal University of Wales, UK)

Coordinating the review of the MBA programme that was running
and submitting a validation document as requested for by the University of Wales.
This was completed within 6 weeks of Charles agreeing to part-time work in March 2003.

A totally new item developed at that time by Charles was the 'Programme Specification' as required by the UK system.

From an 'education' and curriculum design' point of view, it may be useful pointing out that the 'Programme Specification' was argued out by Charles to be somewhat idealistic ... and the objectives etc could be refined and become more focussed as the study programme ran accompanied by a reflective process. The University of Wales accepted the explanation ... also in the case of the two programmes referred to below.

The document provided here is the latest version updated by Charles when he completed the assignment at the Institute in 2006.

Much more work was involved in developing from scratch a new BSc programme in Business Management. Charles led the team and coordinated the work.  One again, the 'Programme Specification' and other material required for validation were completed by him. After studying the academic regulations of a number of UK Universities, he designed a set of Academic Regulations that was commended by the representatives of the University of Wales. Various other procedures/guides such as 'Guidance on Marking', 'Guidance of Peer Assessment',  and standardisation of Dissertation Covers etc were completed by him.

He personally developed the following module outlines.

Level 1:
Introduction to Information Technology

Level 2:
Information Systems for Business
Business and Professional Ethics
Management of Change
Multi-culturism and Diversity Management

Level 3:
Contemporary Issues in Management
Dissertation
plus the outline for the "Seminar" in the different pathways

Even more demanding and finally more satisfying was the work was involved in developing from scratch a new BSc programme in Computing. Once again Charles led the team and coordinated the work. He personally developed some of the modules such as:

Level 1:
Professional & Personal Development

Level 3:
Project
Professional Issues in Computing
Information Systems Management
Emerging Trends & Technologies in Computing

Charles considers the experience gained at Imperial as most precious and enriching. There was challenging and creative work. And then in turning the documents into reality and helping to run the different programmes he became more and more convinced that it was possible to achieve relevance and quality right here in Sri Lanka ... with even less resources than those that the national universities in fact have.

It may also be mentioned in passing that while the "National University System" was not that ready to consider Charles' viewpoints on Higher Education reform ... the Private Sector had trust in him and encouraged him to contribute.

The religious tradition within which Charles has grown holds as precious the words " Verily I say unto you, no prophet is accepted in his own country" as well as the comments about Elias and Eliseus being sent on a mission etc. Thus the above is only noted. Charles does observe many things and reflects on them ... and contributes what he can in the way he can.
