From the point of view of the family, 2005 was an eventful year.

Nilmini graduates in April

nilmini graduating

Nilmini completed  the two years of study and  training for the internationally recognised AMI Montessori Diploma (Headquarters in Holland www.montessori-ami.org).

"Good Shepherd Maria Montessori Training Centre" at St Bridget’s, Colombo  is AMI’s franchise holder in Sri Lanka.

Nilmini is seen receiving the certificate from a senior nun who is an external examiner on the programme.

Two photos one taken after the ceremony ...
and one the day after.
Nilmini was fortunate to get a chance to be a 'teacher' at the Montessori Centre there itself.

below: is a batch photo of those who completed the course that year.

And then, its Rukmal's turn ... graduating in August

Rukmal receives the Degree Certificate from Prof Barry Plumb, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University.

He worked hard and deserved the First Class Honours he achieved.

IFS
IIT
Rukmal had a job offer from Virtusa (www.virtusa.com)where he had done his placement but finally he opted to work at IFS (www.ifsworld.com/lk/ ) Its R&D headquarters is located in the building shown on the left. On the right is the IIT (Informatics Insitute of Technology formerly at www.iics.ac.lk but they seem to be developing a new website at www.iitsl.com)  ...(Charles' involvement 1988-1998 in its setting up and development was referred to on the 2004 web page). Rukmal was a student there  from 2001 to 2005 and achieved the degree. He was offered an opportunity to be part-time lecturer and so he continues to teach a few evenings a week while working at IFS.

At the NBQSA awards (see brief news item) Rukmal was proud to win the Silver Award. The first place was won for a group project and so was the third.

nbqsa montage

Rukmal is seen receiving the Award (trophy and certificate) from one of the former Presidents of the Sri Lanka Section of the British Computer Society.  (Charles did ask Rukmal why he was facing the camera ...says Rukmal: "When I was there, the Cameraman was telling me to look at the camera and I did it!")
At the bottom of the montage is a picture of the three winners (leader representing the group in the case of the Gold and Bronze awards).

Back to matters connected with Charles and the family ...

ampitiya
The National Seminary at Ampitiya was celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

Various events were held during the year. One day was set apart for a get-together of  alumni who were not or no longer in the religious ministry. Here on left is a group photo taken on that occasion. Some of the past Rectors are seated in the front row.

UK university students volunteer to work with our undergraduates ..
A friend of Charles' Belgian sister Bernadette contacts him about some volunteer work during the summer for two students from Lancaster University and two from Sheffield. That was agreed to and arranged. They worked with us for two weeks each helping with activity based learning of conversational English ...

workshop1
Left: a drama on problems with neighbours following a Sinhala-Tamil marriage.
Right: The father is a drunkard, and what the wife and the 3 daughters go through is acted out.

Left: Interaction between University students from different communities

Right: Well, evidently, presenting a song!

Left: A group photo taken after the event marking the end of the 2-week session.  Arrow indicates the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof Wijebandara
who, many years back, had done his PhD at Lancaster.

Right: Students presented two plaques to Kitsy and Lucy (both from Lancaster).

workshop2

Patrick and Sarah who ran the 2nd programme of 2 weeks were both from Sheffield University.

The pictures were taken at the small 'do' that marked the end of the 2-week programme.

A scene from a drama that was acted out ... a student arguing out a point in a debate compeititon ...etc are shown.

As would be clear from the photos here ... the two groups of students found it to be a wonderful experienced and enjoyed it.

Yes, there were more visitors ...

martine

Martine, sister of Bernadette of Belgium, arrived in Sri Lanka on 26th December and joined us for a meal that night. We lit candles to remember her elder sister who had died only a few weeks earlier ... and the victims of the tsunami a year earlier and joined in prayer prior to sharing a Christmas meal. Nalanthi, her adopted Sri Lankan daughter, her brother Vincent and others were part of the group.

We ended the year with a visit to the Fishing Hut at Maskeliya close to to Adam's Peak.  Charles and Nilmini too joined them. It was fun for them to be there without electricity etc.

On the left (middle and lower) are two photos taken at Kithulampitiya (Galle) which was the children's home from which Nalanthi was adopted. For Nalanthi's solemn communion she had wanted to do something for that home. Charles coordinated the work locally and new furniture and sheleves etc were prepared and presented to them. In the second photo Nalanthi is seen with food and gifts she had arranged for the children of the home.
