Remembering It As If It Was Yesterday

By Vickey Stamps

Crescent City,California

I remember like it was just yesterday
That big old barn and the smell of hay
Pa told us kids how we come to be
On this high plains ground eventually
Pa'd been a cowboy all his life
Till he moved to town and took a wife
Ma was smart beyond her years
For behind Pa's smile Ma felt his tears
So she packed their things, said good-by
And they moved out under the open sky
Pa made a shelter over their head
Weren't much more than a simple shed
My Papa John caught wild horses ,sold a few
Bought our bull Fred and a heifer or two
Before too many years, months and days
Pa had him a herd that spread quiet aways
Ma had a ranch house,a daughter and son
And a kiss for us all when each day was done
Now Papa's called Gramps,I'm John number two
And I'll tell you as sure as sun dries off due
This little critter in my arms,my first little boy
Is John number three,He's my pride and joy
Ma's gone where Cowgirl Angels fly
She's fixing a home and we'll meet by and by
Yep,it sure does seem like just yesterday
When we had that big barn and the smell of hay.
