1911 - An Indian Summer at Brooklands - Page 6
Now followed the second race in the Collier-de Rosier match series, this time over five laps or 13.6 miles. Once again Charlie lost his initial lead and the end of lap one found Jake hanging on to his rear wheel. The same story was repeated on lap two. In the middle of lap three a tremendous cry went up from the spectators, when they saw that Jake had slowed. Charlie had flashed out of sight behind the Byfleet aeroplane sheds, before his rival had completed the length of the Railway Straight! Continuing, Charlie completed the remaining two laps and crossed the line the winner. But what had happened to Jake?

Shortly after Charlie had finished, Jake motored in on a tyre-less front rim, the remains of his front cover dangling from the wheel hub. When the crowd realised what had happened, they gave Jake a great ovation. Apparently, when flat out on the Railway Straight, a small stone had pierced his front tyre and rapidly deflated it. With great skill he managed to keep his machine on an even keel, and motor in, to the pits minus front tyre on a badly bent rim. Result:

SECOND COLLIER-DE ROSIER MATCH RACE (13.59 miles). Rolling start at the Fork and Fork finish.

1.C. R. Collier (998 Matchless-JAP) 79.92 mph

2. J. de Rosier (994 Indian)

The All-Comers' Open Handicap which followed attracted nineteen starters and was over five laps. Oliver Godfrey (994 Indian) scratch man in this race, was clearly in winning form and was soon overhauling all-and-sundry. He took a different line to most riders when coming down past the Fork, as he cut across very close, literally under the noses of the lap scorers. Roaring home an easy winner, Godfrey finished seventeen seconds ahead of the second man, Harry Martin (345 Martin-JAP), whom he had passed on the Byfleet Banking on the final lap. Frank McNab (493 Trump-JAP) was a close third three seconds later. Result:

ALL-COMERS' HANDICAP (13.59 miles) with a Fork start and finish.

1.       O. C. Godfrey (994 Indian)          scratch                   74.46 mph

2.       H. Martin (345 Martin-JAP)         2min 55s Hcap       57.62 mph

3.       F. A. McNab (493 Trump-JAP)    2min 30s Hcap       59.15 mph
