| Freddie Dixon came home second some 10 minutes later, staggering a little as he dismounted; while third man Reuben Harveyson was completely exhausted after the epic ride.
As expected Victor Horsman easily won the 500cc Class and Parham confirmed his supremacy amongst the 750cc solos. Although riding in considerable pain Harry Bashall's gamble paid off, the Martinsyde trio taking the team prize. The most amazing performances were those in the 350cc and 250cc Classes. Norris on the Ivy lived up to his earlier promise and won at over 51mph; while Bert Kershaw on the little New Imperial finished with his exhaust note as crisp as at the start of the race, to take the 250cc Class at only a mile-an-hour less. The final speeds were as follows: BMCRC 500-MILE RACE (Fork start & finish. Over 185 laps) Class Winner Speed (mph): A (250cc) B. Kershaw (249 New Imperial-JAP) 50.07 B (350cc) N. Norris (349 Ivy) 51.69 C (500cc) V.E. Horsman (490 Norton) 62.31 D (750cc) E.W. Parham (688 Coventry-Victor) 56.00 E (1000cc) H. Le Vack (998 Indian) 70.42 'Miller' Cup: won by Le Vack; 'Horsman' Cup: won by Norris; Team prize: won by W. H. Bashall (678 Martinsyde), J. T. Bashall (678 Martinsyde) and H.H. Bowen (497 Martinsyde). The prize-winning Martinsydes had V-twin engines, with the unusual overhead-exhaust side-inlet disposition of valves. The inlet ports were on the inside of the 'V' and fed from single carburetters via T-junction manifolds and all-chain transmission was used. Harry and Bizzy Bashall finished second and fifth in the 750cc Class at 55.03 and 50.49mph, riding the larger 678cc (70 X 88mm) Martinsydes, while Harold Bowen rode the new 497cc (60 X 88mm) model to a creditable fourth in the 500cc Race at 56.01 mph. Freddie Edmond (499 sv Triumph) was an easy second to Horsman in the 500cc Class, at 59.34mph, well ahead of George Shemans on the Ricardo-Triumph, who averaged 56.94mph. [page 5] |
