“Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust is a voluntary organization
working for the prevention of disabilities and the rehabilitation of the
handicapped in and around Delhi since 1981.
Beginning modestly on the terrace of a residence, the
organisation has come a long way, now offering comprehensive services through
integrated education, medical care, vocational training and manufacturing of
mobility aids. It has also undertaken an antenatal care and immunization
programme in collaboration with the Delhi Municipal Corporation and other
council agencies and NGOs.
The trust runs a school upto class VIII where equal
emphasis is laid on cultural, sports and craft activities for overall
personality development. About 450 differently abled children benefit from this
facility.
In addition to regular classes, the school has provision
of non-formal education and a Child Guidance Centre for slow learners employing
a full time psychologist, Special Educators and Social Workers.
Regular courses in HMT watch repair, Computer, Textile
designing, Carpentry, Knitting and Sewing are being run to provide
opportunities for self employment. Mobility aids are also being manufactured by
qualified orthotists and technicians at the Centre. Most of the programmes are
sponsored by the Ministry of Welfare.
Camps for medical examination and fitments of aids and
appliances are organised all over the country. The trust has to date attended
to over 18000 beneficiaries. The facilities of corrective surgery, X-ray,
pathology Lab, alongwith Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy
units are rendering much needed services. The Community Based Rehabilitation
Centre programmed sponsored by Action Aid India is also reaching the
communities in three clusters in Delhi consisting of the resettlement colonies
and urban slums.
Their branch in Gwalior(MP) is also offering similar
services.
The trust has also started a Teacher's Training Course in
Special Education for Cerebral Palsy and disabilities. The course is recognized
by the Rehabilitation Council of India.
Amar Jyoti has played a significant role in the field of
rehabilitation. Its services have been lauded in the form of many International
and National awards.

“Clinical Research on Post Polio Residual Paralysis
During the year 1998-99 a sum of RS.2 lakhs has been
released to Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust under the extra mural research scheme
of the Parishad and the trust had started its clinical research on Post Polio
Residual Paralysis during the year 1999-2000. The clinical trial was carried
out at Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust and Research Centre, Karkardooma. The trial
was carried out under the research team of Dr. (Mrs) Kavita Roy, Dr. Amita
Jain, Dr. S. Kataria, Physiotherapsit, Mrs. S. Panda, Social Worker and Mrs. N.
Saxena, Dispenser.
The Objectives of study were
- To reduce the motor deficit in polio affected limbs
to an extend when the use of mobility aids could be reduced to minimum
- To identify most efficacious, inexpensive
homoeopathic medicine without any side effect, and their potency
- To improve the gait and synchronization of limbs and
body movements
- To help in improving the motor power and deformities
so that corrective surgery is minimized and even eliminated
The study covered 50 numbers of patients (39 cases (29
cases and 10 control case under the study and 11 cases dropped out); the
patients were mostly students at the Amar Jyoti Integrated School, which
enabled for closer monitoring of the status of the study group. The responses
of the study trial were to be placed before the Scientific Advisory Committee
during the year 2000-01.”
