What is Kushta Nivaran Sangh?

Sounds ominous, if you’re a Sabrang/FOIL/SACW Pigeonhole Apparatchik. “Sangh”? Need one look further?

“Kushta Nivaran” means: “Leprosy Patient Relief”.  “Sangh” means “group”.

DON’T click on the link below, unless you know what leprosy looks like. They have plenty of images there. You won’t find film stars or poster children here – just dear souls, and very, very brave, dedicated  people.

Damn those who would call these people “hate-mongers” – and call themselves “researchers” or even “humans”.

“A Ray Of Hope, In The Dark

It is nearly four decades from today that Shri Sadashiv Govind Katre, a Railway employee struck by the dreadful disease Leprosy, had been outcast by his own people. Getting himself cured and out of the claws of this dreadful, awful stigmatic disease in 1960, Katreji, took step to work for the cause of like sufferers. Being blessed by Shri 'M. S. Golwalkar',   with the resolute mind and clear perception Katreji chose a disease prone area 'Champa' an area of abundannt poverty, illiteracy, and superstition.

Kushta Nivaran Sangh  was looked upon by common people with a little worry,  people were hesitant to come forward inspite of their appreciation to the cause. The collections were megre. His determination, however, was applauded when a generous donor for the first time, donated an acre of unproductive land with a hut and a well.

Adding his own life earned fortune to these donations, Katreji made a cottage where a batch of 3 leprosy patients were sheltered. A pound of rice per housewife of Champa town could meet out the hunger of these patients. This ball thus started rolling. The funds gathered were able to add a few acres of land. This resulted in regaining self-confidence amongst the patients who by now had learnt to breath freely and started to dream of spring in life. This zeal for life induced the patients to undertake more responsibilities of respectable life. The craze for respect as human beings, lead them to work hard for the cause.

Construction of MADHAV SAGAR in memory of 'Shri Guruji' by these life regained human beings was a landmark of their zeal for life, a mile stone in the real service to humanity, a path to self help and co-operation paved out without the jugglary of words.

Katreji left for heavenly abode in 1977 but the devotion enlightened the hearts of so many enabling them to continue this pious project.

The other problem which confronted Katreji was the rehabilitation of the children of the patients. To fulfil this dream also, the patients themselves came forward to start a school-cum-residential cultural institute 'Sushil Bal Grih'. The hearts of the patients leaped with joy to see how even the minutest detail of their rehabilitation is carefully attended to, especially by their own people. About 153 children are developing academically, socially and culturally. The institution is heading towards selfsufficiency. It is associated with renowned national educational organisation, Akhil Bhartiya Vidya Bharati.

Today, the boarding lodging and maintenance, of 325 patients, teachers, workers and children is being managed. They have self employment and self acquired jobs best suitable to their physical and mental ability.

The success story of katreji's dream doesn't end here. With the growing popularity and fame of institution hundreds of well wisher donors visit the Ashram necessitating a guesthouse to be constructed. Here again resoluteness of patients gives a golden shine. They have constructed a Guest House 'Deen Dayal Bhavan' with all amenities.

A project of construction of a hospital for operations and post operation care is in making. This has become possible only through the generous donations received from Smt. Sushilaben Ramniklal Jhaveri Charitable Trust (Mumbai),  Seva International (UK), District Grand Lodge (Mumbai) and the like generous donors. We are sure the poor and underpriviledged patients, will not be neglected for want of this service.

We appeal for donations from the valued esteemed donors and to be generous to lend a hand and assistance for this cause. “
