Mort is the son of Farmer who specialized in distilling the wine from reannual grapes (grapes that grow a year before they are planted). He was born near the small town of Sheepridge. When it was clear that he wasn't suited to life on the farm, his father Lezek decided to get him hired as an apprentice. This decision led to him becoming Death's deputy. He was taken to Death's kingdom which is outside time (and has no colors, merely shades of black). Here he met Albert Malich a former wizard and founder of the Unseen University in Ankh-Morpork, who served as Death's cook in exchange for being able to live outside of time. He also met Ysabell, a young girl who Death had adopted. During the course of his duties as Death's representative Mort alters history by saving the life of princess Keli, this leads to two time lines developing for a short period of time. To try and rectify the situation Mort enlists the help of a wizard called Cutwell
