| With storm clouds hovering, lowering overhead, The lovers walked along the shore, hand in hand. Cautiously silent, oblivious to all but each other. Truly lost in a mutual pain that was theirs alone. Suddenly, their voices raised in consternation, Arms gesturing then crossed in the half-light. Accusations were flung in vivid sharp anger, Then lost in the clash of thunder and lightening. Rain began to fall, drenching them through, But what does it matter, that's insignificant. The force of their painful, hateful words Pushed and drove everything before them. Wrenching tears mingled with the rainfall, And quietly bathed their tormented faces. The hurt showed clearly, as the bolts of light flashed Displaying faces that once loved ever so deeply. Neither cared who was wrong anymore, it was over. Nor did they want to visualize the others perception, For they were caught in their own private pain, Struggling to make deaf ears hear, or simply care. Over and over, how many times had they tried? Pleading...No, begging to find some common ground. Trying to love and forgive without recriminations. Trying to hold close what once was, and wished for again. It was clear, the threads of love and trust were snapped. So apparent...Both realizing and mourning their loss. Nothing could be achieved, no more words to be said. Only an ending could bring them happiness or peace. The sky darkened, the rain fell and the thunder crashed, Leaving two lonely souls to share a last loving embrace. Two hearts broken by guilt, and filled with regret. They parted in the dark, taking separate paths into the night. Of that night, my recollection is all too painfully clear. Of that last embrace, I'm left wondering why it all fell apart. Of that last memory, my eyes tear and my heart aches. Oh, how I miss the love and the good in that past life...Still ! Charlotte |
