Character Name: C'leh
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Race: Dragonrider
Rank: Dragonrider
Description: C’leh’s hair is thick and slightly long, brushing the collar of his tunic in the back and brushing his eyebrows in the front, and most often it is quite messy since he doesn’t believe in properly brushing it all the time and instead just runs his hand through it every now and then. His hair is a rather interesting colour, with silver naturally colouring the ends before fading to a gold and then a deep bronze near the roots. Framed by a heavily bronzed face, his eyes of brilliant sky blue laughingly glisten until he gets angry, where the pristine sky blue becomes a dark storm gray, sparked with lashes of white and a merciless fire. His nose appears rather crooked, and it is true because he has broken his nose several times in the past, and scars can be seen here and there should one look hard enough. Around his neck is worn a single dragon fang that rattles softly against the fasteners of his wherhide tunic as he moves. The wherhide tunic he wears is normally a light tan, with a short-sleeved shirt beneath it of white or pale beige, revealing the muscles in his arms. Around his waist is a thick black wherhide belt, where you can always see a belt knife in a plain tanned sheath. Sometimes, mostly during parties and celebrations, the belt knife will be replaced by a dagger in a plain black sheath. His pants are usually made of a light material and coloured the same way as his tunic, meeting tall brown boots at his knees. The boots are rather tight around his calf, laced up with tanned leather laces. C’leh stands at about 6’4” tall.
Personality: C'leh's personality can be described as serpent-like sometimes. He seems quite secretive and likes to be on his own. He’s very independent, liking to do things for himself rather than having somebody else do things for him. Despite this, he’s hard-headed and does everything his way (or at least whatever he can get away with without getting watch duty). Despite the fact he seems to really hate his younger brother, C’leh really loves Raleh and is constantly helping the boy weasel out of trouble and reassuring him that there’s a dragon waiting for him out there in one of the many clutches to come. C’leh isn’t really a bad guy, but carries a belt knife simply for self-defence and sometimes he’ll clean kills that Whisketh has taken down. C’leh is always prepared…but it’s usually for the wrong thing unfortunately.
History: (I don’t feel like going in-depth right now) C’leh’s parents were weyrmates. His father, R’keh, was the rider of a bronze dragon named Haemorrth while his mother, Celia, rode a gold, named Waranth, and held the rank of Junior Weyrwoman. C’leh was the first born, his original name being Chaleh, and his father was raising him to become a slate or bronze rider. How disappointed was R’keh when his son stepped onto the Hatching Sands at the age of 15 and came off having Impressed an Adder dragon. R’keh was far from proud, though Celia was quite proud of her son for having Impressed at all. Later that night, while the Hatching feast carried on in the Dining Hall, a fight ensued between a drunken R’keh and a frightened Celia. R’keh had no idea what had happened until the next day when it was found that Celia had been heavily beaten by R’keh. Now it was C’leh’s turn to be mad.
Once Training was over, C’leh flew proudly, still hating his father. It was ten Turn after C’leh was born, five Turns before he Impressed, that he was “blessed” with a little brother, Raleh. C’leh hated his little brother, who was very annoying as they were growing up. When C’leh was 19, both his parents died, simply of old age, leaving C’leh to take care of Raleh. To this day, C’leh still takes care of Raleh, and has certainly become fond of the little hellion.

The lights were out in C’leh’s weyr, as were they out in Pern’s skies. It was early morning and Rukbat had not yet lifted its tired head from its pillow. The Adder-rider slept peacefully with his sharrs curled up on either side of his head, their soft purring keeping him deep in slumber, while his usually fighting terries were curled about one another on his chest, which was quite a tight fit for three of the creatures. He was more or less splayed eagle on his bed, hands and feet sticking out from beneath a twisted sleeping fur. He was so sleepy; he didn’t notice the slight creak of the door as it opened, admitting somebody to his weyr. Whisketh, too, was unphased by this, continuing to sleep, twisting onto her back with a snort. In silence the visitor snuck across the clear floor of the weyr, followed by a prowling gray-winged sharr and two swooping terries. Finally the visitor sprang onto C’leh’s stomach, laughing loudly as the terries and sharr swooped down on the man, making the greatest racket ever.
’Wake up! Wake up C’leh!’ C’leh jumped and, rather than him staying on the bed and shoving his little brother off, he fell out of the bed, startling his terries and sharrs into wakefulness with loud squawks and hisses. He struggled in his sleeping fur, which seemed to have caught him up tight.
”Raleh! I’ve told you time and time again not to wake up me up in such a way!”
‘It’s the only way I can wake you up though C’leh, besides, it’s very funny.’
“Only to you Raleh.” With some help from Eruption and Coalt, as well as Onyx, Shield, and Fanges, C’leh came free of his furs and stood up, rubbing his back for a moment where he had landed.
[Up Whisk, up!]
{I’m not ready to hatch yet ma…} Whisketh rolled over, placing her head beneath her wing, not wanting to wake up quite yet.
[You’ve already hatched you silly thing, now get up!]
{I tol’ ya I ain’t ready ma!} She then moved her head to cover it with both foreclaws. C’leh sighed and shook his head, turning his clear blue eyes to his other companions.
[Onyx, Shield, Fanges, you three know what to do.]
/Yup!\ The flits trilled in unison and swooped into the air and onto Whisketh’s foreclaws. They all began to nip at the large claws, finally causing Whisketh to reveal her head and snort at them.
{I’m up you silly bugs! Now let me be! Faranth help me! You’re no better than most firelizards sometimes!}
|Are not, we’s better!| Piped up Onyx quite bravely, though the Jet terry had always been quite bold. The three terries returned to Theirs, landing on his bed with a trill each.
”Now why did you wake me Raleh?” C’leh turned his eyes to his little brother, who was kneeling on the bed, petting Stormy. The boy looked up at his big brother, the same blue eyes looking right back at C’leh.
’I don’t know, I just felt like you had to get up.’
“Are you in some sort of trouble kid?” C’leh sat down on the edge of the bed, looking down at his little brother.
’No, I ain’t in trouble with anybody.’
“Are you serving a punishment for something that happened a sevenday or more ago?”
‘Yes! I want you to get me out of it C’leh! I don’t wanna wash pots for the headwoman! Her flits are always watching me and it makes me very annoyed! And when I’m washing pots, Stormy, Neuro and Sooty have to stay in my room!’ C’leh chuckled and his brother’s anger and annoyance, knowing that Raleh adored his pets more than he adored dragons.
”Well…what was it that got you into this mess kid?”
‘Will you quit calling me kid! Call me Ral or Raleh, but quit calling me kid!’
“Sorry Ral. What got you into this mess?”
‘I was just mindin’ my own business and suddenly this ‘rider came up to me and started yelling, saying I slathered numbweed in his pants.’ C’leh groaned, happening to know the rider that Raleh had done that too. The man was not one to give forgiveness.
{You have to try love.}
[I know Whisk, but Sk’eve is one of the most difficult men to deal with in the Weyr.]
{Raleh is your brother.}
[But he also played a prank, and quite a nasty one at that.]
{I know Mine, but he really does deserve to look after his sharr and terries.}
[I just don’t know Whisk.]
{I’ll back you up should you decide to face Sk’eve.}
[Thanks Whisk.] C’leh sighed and looked at his brother, shaking his head.
”Well Ral, I’ll see what I can do. You go the kitchens though and tell the headwoman that C’leh says you can have your pets with you, then you should be allowed to have them with you.”
‘Does the headwoman like you?’
“No, but she knows me and usually does what I ask.”
‘Thanks bro.’ Raleh gave C’leh a quick hug, grinning broadly. ’I’ll see you later!’ Raleh bounded out of C’leh’s weyr, followed quickly by his three pets, all of the them flying after the boy, and headed down to the lower caverns as quickly as he could, leaving C’leh with his own critters, all of which seemed to want attention. They all seemed to be fighting over who deserved attention first, so C’leh broke it up.
[Will you all stop! Shield, you first, I have to oil your hide pal.]
`Ha ha!` Shield laughed at the others and flicked his tongue out before fluttering over to the table C’leh used to oil his terries and groom his sharrs. C’leh grabbed the oil from beneath the table and started to oil the copper hide, knowing that blemishes could prove fatal to Shield. And so began his morning process of oiling every terry and grooming ever sharr until they were all happy.
Raleh hurried down to the lower caverns so that he wouldn’t be late for “duty”, his pets still following him as quickly as they could, only the terries out-distancing the boy while Stormy flew right by his head. He laughed and dodged around the few riders who were awake and grumbling along the corridors, getting shouted at his he ran right onward, only saying a quick apology. Ral finally skidded to a stop within the lower caverns and was met by the headwoman.
’I’m glad you’ve decided to join us once again Raleh, you know what you’re supposed to do, now go and do it. And get rid of your beasts!’
‘C’leh said I can keep my pets with me!’
’I don’t care what C’leh said, get rid of your beasts.’
‘No! They’re staying and I promise they’re not going to help me or make any trouble!’ He gave the headwoman his most pleading look and, with a sigh, the headwoman gave in.
’Oh fine! They can stay! But at the first sign of trouble from ANY of them! They have to go!’
‘Thank you!’ Raleh scurried off to get to work, already there were dirty pots from the preparation of breakfast and there would be more to come as well as things for Raleh to peel or clothes for him to wash. With his trusted terries sitting on the brim of the pot his was watching and Stormy purring softly from behind his back, Raleh worked hard, but also kept a close eye on his pets.
(Don’t any of you make trouble! I want you all to stay here with me, so no trouble!)
+Yes Raleh!+ All the critters answered in unison, making Raleh laugh since they all had very different voices. The headwoman shot a quick glare at him and he silenced and bent back to his work, Stormy leaping up onto the counter beside Raleh, watching him intently with pretty yellow-green eyes. Sooty was having a hard time keeping himself from making trouble, but with a little help from Neuro, he was kept perched on the rim of the pot until Raleh had to dump the accumulated water from it and declare the pot clean. As Ral went to dump the pot, the two terries leapt into the air and circled above the boy, waiting until they had a stable perch again on the rim of another pot before settling back down. Ral gave Stormy a quick pat before going back to work…
C’leh worked in silence, having finished oiling Shield and Fanges already, he was now scrubbing oil into Onyx’s glistening black hide, Eruption and Coalt waiting impatiently for their morning grooming. Both of the males slunk around the bed, Eruption finally pouncing on Shield, having learnt that pouncing on Fanges revealed deadly fangs and great pain (he had gotten nicked by one of those fangs a while ago). Shield squawked in surprise and fell off the bed with a thump, getting back into the air quickly and diving at Eruption with a screech. C’leh sighed and turned to the fighters, glaring at each of them in turn. Shield almost stopped midair at C’leh’s glare, but then landed on the bed while Eruption was cowed and crept onto one of the pillows to curl up and wait for his turn. C’leh had finished Onyx and the Jet flit fluttered over to the bed.
”Ok Coalt, your turn.” The sharr leapt off the bed and flew to the table, landing with the grace of, well, a Terran cat. C’leh grabbed the brush from the ledge beneath the table and started to groom the grey tabby fur, making sure that the sharr was clean and his black stripes stood out from the grey. Coalt purred softly and made sure his wings were kept away from even the soft bristles of the brush. Once his fur was silken as it always was, C’leh applied a small amount of oil to each wing before sending Coalt back to the bed and calling Eruption over. The sharr snorted.
^Finally!^ The red-winged sharr landed not quite as gracefully as Coalt had, but he landed none the less and C’leh shook his head and started to groom out the sharr’s fur.
{C’leh dear, are you going to confront Sk’eve?}
[I don’t know Whisk, that’s what I’m thinking of right now.]
{You have to have your mind made up by the time you’re done Eruption.}
[Why?]
{Because, then you’ll leave the weyr.}
[Not in just my sleep wear Whisk! Jeez! I don’t need to be getting eyes from the female riders.]
{True, I’d hate to share you with anybody.} C’leh chuckled and, having finished brushing eruption, dabbed oil on the deep red wings before sending the sharr back onto the bed.
”Ok peeps, you’re all done now. I have to change and then we’ll get out of this weyr.” He clapped his hands together, answered by all kinds of sounds from all his critters. He chuckled and then all the terries and both the sharrs took to the air and started giving clothes for C’leh. The Adder-rider watched in silence, shaking his head as pants, a shirt, a tunic, and his boots were all placed on the bed.
”You forgot the be-oh.” He chuckled as Shield placed his belt and beltknife on the bed. ”And my fa-“ Fanges appeared with C’leh’s dragon-fang on a string, putting it straight into the man’s hand. C’leh patted the Fanges’s head and tied the string around his neck before getting dressed, removing his sleeping pants and pulling on his normal “day pants” as he called them.
It took him only a few moments to get dressed totally and then he was ready to get out of his weyr.
[Where do you think Sk’eve is Whisketh?]
{Hmm…} Whisketh paused for a moment, searching for Sk’eve’s dragon’s mind. {Bowl, Skeveth is being bathed.}
[Ok, out on the ledge Whisk. Shield and Fanges, on my shoulders.] The two terries promptly did as they were told. [Onyx, meet us down there, take Eruption and Coalt with you. Coalt, Eruption, do as Onyx says until I get there.] The creatures did as they were told, sharrs and Jet terry disappearing between while C’leh mounted his dragon. Once mounted, bareback as usual, Whisketh swept into the air and soared off towards the Bowl, quickly spotting Skeveth with her long eye.
{They’re there Mine.}
[Righty-o Whisk.] The Adder dragon shook her head and circled down to land not far from the brown dragon. C’leh dismounted and made his way over to Sk’eve, the man watching him approach. Sk’eve was an older rider, just as his dragon was an older dragon, and Sk’eve was quite a believer in punishing and not being kind to young’uns.
’What do you want Adder-rider?’
“I came on behalf of my little brother, Raleh. He’s being run ragged from having to get up early, work in the caverns all day, and then get back to his quarters late. Can you please let him off, he’s been doing kitchen duty for a sevenday already.” Onyx came to perch beside Fanges on C’leh’s shoulder, watching Sk’eve carefully. Coalt and Eruption were both perched on Whisketh’s shoulder, watching the happenings along with the Adder dragon.
’I don’t see why I should, the little brat deserves what he got. And obviously he does such things because he receives no discipline from his guardian.’ C’leh had to admit, Sk’eve was arrogant. But at his second statement, C’leh’s eyes widened and he snarled.
”I discipline Raleh only when somebody hasn’t already done so! Now, I ask you again sir, will you let up on my little brother and allow him to end his kitchen duty!?” It was one thing to put his brother on kitchen duty for sevendays on end, but to say he, C’leh, did not take responsibility for Raleh was just aggravating!
’Let me think about this…NO!’
“Let my brother’s kitchen duty end tonight and I swear on my dragon’s egg that I shall keep him away from you and make sure he never plays another prank on you.”
’No means no bucko, now get out of my sight!’
“Actually, sir, I believe I outrank you and therefore do not need to follow your orders. But I shall leave anyway. Ta.” C’leh returned to his dragon, grinning.
{Why are you grinning, you have achieved nothing but to get Sk’eve angry.}
[Ah my faithful heart, but I out-rank him.]
{And…}
[You’ll see dear, you’ll see.] He patted the sleek neck and asked Whisketh to take them up, which she promptly did, Eruption and Coalt blinking between back to their weyr while the terries remained perched on C’leh’s shoulder, holding on tightly to the wherhide tunic. Whisk landed on her ledge and C’leh promptly dismounted, heading to the exit of his weyr.
{Where are you going?}
[To the lower caverns heart. Why don’t you go hunt, I should be back soon.]
{Ok Mine.} The Adder swept off once more, heading to the feeding grounds, while Hers strode down to the lower caverns, followed only by Onyx, Eruption, and Coalt, Shield and Fanges having swept off with Whisketh to feed.
C’leh reached the lower caverns and quickly found Raleh, spotting the boy sitting in a corner and peeling roots. C’leh strode over to his little brother, who had both of his terries and his sharr sitting around him, watching quietly. As soon as Raleh saw his big brother, he jumped up and hugged C’leh.
’Did you talk to Sk’eve?! Did he say I’m off the hook?!’
“I talked to Sk’eve, and no, he didn’t say you were off the hook.”
‘Then why did you come down?’
“Because I say you’re off the hook.”
‘The headwoman won’t let me go because of what you say though.’
“I out-rank Sk’eve, I can over-rule his orders. Come on bro, let’s go watch Whisketh hunt.” Raleh laughed and Neuro and Sooty landed on his shoulders while Stormy flew behind them with Eruption and Coalt. Ignoring the glare that followed them, the brothers headed out to the bowl where they would watch dragon, terries, and sharrs feed.
[Just don’t get yourselves all dirty, Eruption and Coalt.]
*Yes C’leh.*
^Fine.^ C’leh sat himself down on a rock with Raleh sitting on the ground, throwing rocks at the bathing lake absently…
