The Dragonballs are what Dragonball is all about. They are a set of 7 mystical balls which when gathered together call forth the dragon god Shenlong who grants you a wish. In the manga there are 4 sets of Dragonballs, but in Dragonball GT another set is added.

Kami-Sama's Dragonballs

These are the original set of dragonballs for the earth. They were created when Mr. Popo asked Kami-Sama to give life to a small dragon model he had made. Kami-Sama did this but added the dragonballs onto this to give humans something to work towards. But they were misused for evil often and Kami-Sama was not going to allow their existence until good people like Goku changed his mind.

These are the properties of the balls:

1. All 7 balls must be gathered in the same spot

2. The incantation "Come Out Shenron" must be spoken

3. Only one wish per gathering

4. After the wish has been granted, Shenron will disappear, and the Dragonballs will turn to stone for 1 year and be scattered across the planet

5. Shenron cannot grant a wish that exceeds Kami-Sama's power

6. You cannot wish for someone's destruction, for someone to fall in love with you or to revive someone who died of natural causes

7. You can revive any number of people, provided they died under the same circumstances

8. Shenron cannot revive anyone who has been revived before

Dende's Dragonballs

After Kami-Sama and Piccolo merge in the Cell Saga, the Dragonballs become useless, as they are linked to life force of the creator (Kami-Sama). But when Goku goes to New Namek to fetch the new Guardian of the Earth, Dende, he is given the power of the Earth's Dragonballs. Dende's Shenron is identical to Kami's as he used the original model of Mr. Popo, from which Shenlong was originally created. He proceeds to power them up so they can grant 2 wishes instead of 1, then between the Cell and Buu Sagas, he powers them up further so they can grant 3 wishes.

These are the properties of the balls:

1. All 7 balls must be gathered in the same spot

2. The incantation "Come Out Shenron" must be spoken

3. Only two wishes per gathering (Three in Buu Saga)

4. After the wish has been granted, Shenron will disappear, and the Dragonballs will turn to stone for 1 year and be scattered across the planet

5. Shenron cannot grant a wish that exceeds Dende's power

6. You cannot wish for someone's destruction, for someone to fall in love with you or to revive someone who died of natural causes

7. You can revive any number of people, provided they died under the same circumstances

8. Shenron cannot revive anyone who has been revived before

Guru's Dragonballs

The original set of Dragonballs which originate from the Planet Namek. They were created from the dreams of Guru, hence Porunga's meaning to be "God of Dreams" in Namekian. The dragonball on Namek are much larger than the ones on Earth (see below) due to their increased power. Also Porunga is many times larger than Shenlong for the same reason.

These are the properties of the balls:

1. All 7 balls must be gathered in the same spot

2. The incantation "Takkarapto Popporunga Pupiritto Paro" must be spoken

3. Three wishes per gathering

4. After the wish has been granted, Porunga will disappear, and the Dragonballs will turn to stone for 1 Namek year (130 Earth Days) and be scattered across the planet

5. Porunga cannot grant a wish that exceeds Guru's power

6. You cannot wish for someone's destruction, for someone to fall in love with you or to revive someone who died of natural causes

7. You can one person per wish

8. Porunga can revive anyone infinite times

Muri's Dragonballs

After the Freeza saga, when all the remaining Nameks were transported to Earth. At this time Guru died, but before he did he transferred the control of the Dragonballs to the next eldest, Muri. Muri carries on in the same way Guru did on New Namek, but he takes the time to power up the Dragonballs until they are stronger than Kaioshin himself (to which he none too pleased).

5. Porunga cannot grant a wish that exceeds Muri's power

6. You cannot wish for someone's destruction, for someone to fall in love with you or to revive someone who died of natural causes

7. You can one person per wish

8. Porunga can revive anyone infinite times

Black Star Dragonballs

These Dragonballs were introduced during Dragonball GT. They were created by Piccolo before he split into Kami and Piccolo Diamou. They look identical to the normal Earth Dragonballs but with a black star instead of a red one which represents the evil in Piccolo's heart. Because they were created before Piccolo split into two beings, they are much stronger than usual. But they have a nasty side effect, after the wish has been granted the Dragonballs scatter through out the universe and if they are not gathered again within a year, the planet on which the last wish was made will be destroyed.

These are the properties of the balls:

1. All 7 balls must be gathered in the same spot

2. The incantation "Come Out Shenron" must be spoken

3. Only one wish per gathering

4. After the wish has been granted, Shenron will disappear, and the Dragonballs will turn to stone for 1 year and be scattered across the universe

5. Shenron cannot grant a wish that exceeds Piccolo's power (which seems limitless)

6. You cannot wish for someone's destruction, for someone to fall in love with you or to revive someone who died of natural causes

Evil Dragons

In Dragonball GT, after the battle with Super Android #17, the Dragonballs were once again gathered to reverse the destructions he had caused. But the Dragonballs each had a crack in them. When Shenron was summoned, it was not the usual green Shenron that appeared. Instead a black, Evil Shenron appeared.

This Evil Shenron ignored our heroes' wish, and instead swallowed the Dragonball and formed a huge blue tornado. From this tornado 7 black dragons flew out, each with a Dragonball in their mouth. Everyone was very puzzled as to what had happened, until Rou Dai Kaioshin explained. He told our heroes that the Dragonballs had a balance of positive and negative energy inside them. When a wish was granted this caused the postive energy to decrease and the negative to increase. Because of Bulma's Dragon Radar, the Dragonballs had been used to much over the years that the negative energy had become to great to be contained withing the Dragonballs, and had resulted in an evil dragon being born from each ball.
