Concrete Angel
Child abuse a horror most of the world sidesteps. Abuse to children is
a form of cruelty that is so common to us, most of don't think twice
and turn our heads the other way. But instead of turning our heads, we
should try and stop it. We must try to stop it for the sake of the children.
Some of them have and will survive. But many will not.
Children are the most sacred and precious gift given us in this world.
Until recently, I never realized that. My son was born February 17, 2003
and having him... it's made me realize how precious children are. The
day after I had him I turned on the TV in my hospital room and the first
thing that I saw was the music video Concrete Angel. I'd heard the
song many times before, I even knew the words and sang along.
But I never paid attention to them.
That video truly changed the way I look at children. It moved me in ways
I'd never thought possible. And it made me think of all the times I looked
away when I knew something was not right.
The guilt and shame I felt was overwhelming, and so was the fear that my
son would one day be the victim. Because as much as we hear it, parent's
are not the only grown-ups who hurt children-physically or emotionally.
Then this fear was multiplied a hundredfold as I realized that hundreds of
thousands of children across the world are already victims.
So I ask you, who read this, to please, PLEASE. don't turn your heads.
Don't close your eyes. For the sake of the children, do something. Call
someone. Just don't turn your head and walk away.
Because one day, that child who needs help, may be one that you know.
A friend, a relative. Maybe even your own son or daughter.
Because if we don't help them, who will?
The song Concrete Angel is written by Stephanie Bentley
and Rob Crosby, and performed by Martina McBride.
