THE PICKETT BUILDING

On October 20, 1994 another Nunica landmark was being destroyed. Another link to our past has now disappeared.

The old Pickett building was originally built in the late 1800s or early 1900s and at one time housed a local creamery.(picture in volume one) Around 1923-1926 it was used as a Chevrolet automobile sales and service owned by Sherm Gleason and Joe Crouse Jr.and the first gasoline pump in Nunica was installed there. It was then purchased by the Pickett family and housed their farm implement business for many years.

Over the years it was extensively remodeled, additions were added and it no longer resembled the original building.

It was last used by B&J Industrial Finishing for their plating and assembly operations. Apparently this operation caused extensive pollution of the area and now the soil around the building site must all be dug out, to a depth of six feet, and the contaminated soil trucked to a suitable landfill for disposal.

Now (Nov. 30, 1994) the large hole is being filled with fresh sand and the area will be leveled and made ready for new use.
