Hopeful Romantic

I got only clouds, when a rainbow was expected.
Offering my heart, it was only rejected.
My heart will recover but it keeps getting harder,
Giving your all leaves you much less to barter.

My naivete` left me open to pain,
But if you give nothing then how can you gain?
Expecting the best - Will it not come to you?
Won't self-fulfilled prophecy make it come true?

There must be a way to keep safe and still give.
To protect your heart but still let it live.
But the mind is a sceptic that will not believe.
Wanting never to give 'til proof it receives.

So I balance myself on that thin narrow wall,
On one side my hope - on the other, a fall.
A hopeful Romantic, out of place, so it seems.
A head full of want and a heart full of dreams.
