Sony recording artist Chantal Kreviazuk joins whale protection campaign Rising music star joins Zoocheck's Freedom for Whales initiative

The August 9, 2000 death of Maria, a dolphin born in the wild, but cruelly captured and confined for 15 years in a small, featureless tank at the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta (Canada), moved Chantal Kreviazuk to throw her support and remarkable talent behind Zoocheck's campaign to save other whales and dolphins from a similar fate.

Upon contacting Zoocheck, Chantal was shocked to learn that Maria was the 4th whale to have died in a twelve month period in Canadian marine parks. A 4-year-old orca, or killer whale, and two wild-caught beluga whales also died at Marineland of Canada in Niagara Falls, Ontario since December 1999. Sadly, these animals are only the most recent victims in a long line of cruel captures, imports, exports, confinement and death in marine parks and aquaria in Canada and around the world.

Compassion for the suffering of others is nothing new to Chantal Kreviazuk . But unlike many who stand idly by and do nothing, this young singer-songwriter and acclaimed pianist uses her voice and talent in the fight to make our world a better place. She does this through her involvement in projects like the Race for the Cure for AIDS, the War Child 2000 Benefit and now, Zoocheck's Freedom for Whales campaign.

But nothing speaks more to Chantal's rare gift for moving people emotionally than her music, as heard in the melancholy beauty of "Blue" to the hopeful inspiration of "Souls" found on her newest album entitled Colour Moving And Still.

In announcing her involvement in Zoocheck's Freedom for Whales campaign, Chantal Kreviazuk said:

"By working together we now have a chance to stop this horrible abuse of whales and dolphins. Capturing these incredible animals and confining them in small, sterile, concrete tanks for human amusement and commercial gain must end. If we all take action now, we can ensure that these intelligent, family-oriented, far-ranging mammals are allowed to live out their lives where they belong, in their ocean homes."
