| I sit inconspicuously (or not) against the front window of the Atomic Coffee shop on 4th Ave in Moorhead. I came here with 3 friends to study, and as we pulled into the north parking lot, we see a large group of teens circled around a train crossing arm. Apparently last night a 15 year old girl was hit by an oncoming train while she rode her bike. A witness to the accident said she rode with her head down, oblivious to the impeding doom. According to the Forum, the witness tried to gain the girl's attention, but she wasn't phased by him, or by the train's ear-piercing horn. She kept going. The witness arrived upon the scene, called for help, and began CPR. As the EMR's arrived, they took over the task of trying to save the young girl's life, for as long as 20 minutes. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The crowd soars and shrinks, while kids walk by the shop. I haven't heard a train since we arrived here, contrary to the typical 5 minute interlude on a normal night. Some kids cry and hold each other, others only looked confused of how to feel. Others who look like they stopped by out of respect. They are covered in blankets. Some clutch on to cups of coffee, others hold candles. They just stand, because what do you actually do in a situation like this? A parked cop car sits in the adjacent parking lot, while legions of underage kids smoke cigarettes. Some cars crawl by, others gun it. |
