Change
Initiatives’ project Nabanna was
declared a winner of the 2003 Gender & ICT Awards promoted
by the Global Knowledge Partnership and
APC Women’s Networking Support Program. The award was given to Change
Initiatives in Geneva at the ICT4D Platform during the World
Summit of Information Society. |

In Nabanna, Change Initiatives
had explored innovative uses of databases, intranet portals and
web-based partnerships in the local language for the benefit of the
poor women . The emphasis is on building a framework for information
sharing, content creation, off-line information dissemination and
web-based partnerships with organisations located outside the region. |

Project Activity |
- Nabanna provided women access to new ICT tools like
high end PC, laptop, palm top, digital camera and developed
various information modules
- Nabanna tested various information dissemination methods
for rural community using a combination of old and new media
- The women participants developed local information database and
disseminated amongst the unaware mass
- Nabanna addressed several issues related to gender
through various information modules
- Nabanna published monthly newsletter for the local
mass
- Nabanna developed a successful two way
communication model between local medical expert and rural women
- Nabanna trained more than 100 women in basics of
computer
- Nabanna provided women a platform to share their view and
raise their voice

Change Initiatives used ethnographic action research
approach to understand the local communication pattern and information
need amongst the poor women community of rural Bengal. The
program was initially supported by UNESCO.
After 3 years of extensive research and several experiments Nabanna
has developed the strategy for developing partnership with women
communities involved in various other activities and bring synergy
with other ICT and non-ICT projects. The new phase is going to be
implemented in the Nadia district in 2006.
