Dear friends,
We hope you are aware of the massive losses that happened to the fishing
sector and the fish workers due to the Tsunami tragedy. The fishing
community that rely on sea for their livelihood is in abject poverty now.
They are also under the threat of yet another calamity happening and are
on an alert mode. Thousands of families have lost their houses and fishing
equipments. Thousands of people are living in relief camps. There are
people showing signs of traumatic shocks. It is the need of the hour to
help people overcome the fear that is gripping them and make them stay in
the fishing sector itself. It is normal that the government and other
agencies come up with support during calamities like this. This is
happening now in the fishing sector too. However, it is crucial that the
rehabilitation of the tsunami affected people is carried out with high
priority. Experience shows that in situations like this the needs of those
affected mentally and physically as well as the young children are
neglected in the process. There is a need to focus on these people.
Kerala Swathanthra Malsya Thozhilaly Federation, with the objective of
helping the tsunami affected fishing communities has taken the initiative
to form Kerala Fisher People's Relief Forum' by including various
