UPDATES
June 26, 2001--Adam called again yesterday from the hospital.  Chance is starting to feel somewhat better.  The blisters in his mouth are healing a bit.  They are hoping that if all goes well, that they will be released from the hospital on Thursday.  Yesterday, they started to ween Chance off the morphine.  As of yesterday, he wasn't neutrapenic either.  His ANC went from 96 to 632 overnight.  His WBC went from .6 to 1.1 (which is still low, but climbing), and his platelets were at 88.  He was tested for sugar, and tested positive.  They are not sure if it is because of the steroids or if he is developing diabetes.  He was able to eat a hotdog and some macaroni and cheese yesterday.  :)   Feeling better.
June 19, 2001--Called the hospital earlier today.  Chance answered his phone.  His voice sounded hoarse and crackly.  He said, "Hi Aunt Misty"  So then he said that "mom" wanted to talk to me, so I talked to Janet.  She said he was neutrapenic, and therefore expected to be in the hospital all week.  His platelets are down to 60 as of today, therefore, his blisters in his mouth keep bleeding.  They've got him on morphine and adevan (sp?) for the pain.  And, his ANC keeps dropping.  She mentioned that they might leave OKC and head back to Tulsa to remain under the care of Dr. K again.  She said that since they opted to continue chemo, that Dr. Mustafa has pretty much disappeared out of the picture.  She said that Chance really doesn't seem to have a doctor there, except for whichever Dr. is on duty for the day.  And since Chance doesn't know these people....he doesn't want them to touch him.  She wants him to be in a place he's comfortable, where he knows the people.  So, according to her...as soon as Chance is able, they will probably head back to Tulsa and back to Dr. K.  But that is up to Chance....
June 17, 2001--(Father's Day)--Adam called from the hospital this afternoon.  They were admitting Chance because he was in a lot of pain.  His bones were hurting him still...and he has developed blisters in his mouth and throat.  They couldn't get him to hardly eat anything.  Biting into a hotdog was extremely painful, and so was yogurt.  So they called Dr. Meyers (the head oncologist) and he told them to go ahead and bring him in.  Poor little boy.  I don't know if they are going to do anything for him to control the pain.  I assume they will.  He's never developed blisters in his mouth before, except after he got Graft-versus-Host disease.  So this part is a little new.  Actually, Adam and Janet didn't expect this much so soon.  Friday's spinal tap went a lot better than the previous one.  But he's just been in a lot of pain over the weekend.  He's not running a fever or anything, but all he does is cry and scream.  He'll be having visitors in about 3 weeks.  That's when me and my boyfriend, and his Granny and Bop-Pa are coming to town...the week after the 4th of July.  No leukemia cells have yet been found throughout his body (but that doesn't mean that ONE cell isn't hiding)  I assume that soon they will do another biopsy of his testicles to see if they still find the cells there.  I don't know what room he's staying in, but as soon as I find out more, I will try and post it.  A lot will depend on how long they expect him to be there.
June 15, 2001--Adam called today from the clinic.  Chance was in for more chemo and another spinal tap.  He said the week was pretty uneventful for the most part.  The spinal tap from last Friday came back good.  But, beginning Thursday, Chance was complaining of his legs hurting him.  He'd run and run, and then just stop and cry.  His legs hurt.  Bone pain is a side effect of the chemo.  The chemo is already starting to rot his teeth and cause cavities.  This happened the first time he had chemo when he was a baby, so when his teeth came in, the front two were rotten.  Those got taken out before the transplant.  Last summer, I don't recall the chemo affecting his teeth.  His counts are still good, but I guess they are starting to drop.  And, he's weighing 33 pounds right now.  Last summer, I recall him weighing 26.  He gains and loses so much weight that he's not much bigger than he was last summer.

Adam got asked a pretty heavy question the other day by Tyler.  Chance and Janet were napping.  Adam and Tyler were playing.  Tyler asked his dad why our hearts stop and we die.  So, Adam explained what the heart did.  And Tyler looked at his dad and said, "but Chance's heart hasn't stopped and he's dying"  Adam said that Chance's heart will probably stop some day.  But hopefully they will have him a little while longer.  And Tyler told his dad, that he didn't want Chance to die, because then he'd be alone.    :(   Hearing this made me cry.  I just wish there was a way to make a 6 year old understand, and not be afraid.  But that is really hard to do when we as adults are afraid and don't understand it ourselves.

Don't forget that Chance LOVES to swim.  But he's not really supposed to swim in the pool because of the port in his chest.  So, knowing that he might not get to have another summer to do it....they want to at least let him enjoy ONE thing he absolutely loves....and that is to swim.  So, what they do...is they wrap surran wrap around his chest area (to cover the entire area) so that his port doesn't get wet...and then they tape it.  The little kids in the pool ask why does he have plastic wrapped around him...but as long as he gets to enjoy his swimming, that's all they care about.

Till I get more information....
