Valmont

Cold, ruthless, and very intelligent, Valmont is the leader of the Dark Hand. Originally from England, he now resides in San Francisco, where the Dark Hand's official building is, and, judging by his faded accent, he has obviously stayed in America for a while now.

Valmont's main purpose in the first season was to serve Shendu, an ancient demon, by using his resources to track down the twelve magic talismans. Then, Shendu would pay the crime lord back with a lost treasure. Being selfish and power-hungry, Valmont immediately liked this this deal. In the second season, however, Shendu is trapped within Valmont's body, much to the dismay of both.

As the series progresses, it becomes perfectly clear that Valmont and Shendu despise each other. In fact, Shendu is one of the few that can dig beneath Valmont's calm, indifferent manner and reveal his short temper. A perfectionist, Valmont has dedicated his life to become a greater power than that of the ordinary human. So far, not many have stopped him, and those that do Valmont is sure to eliminate. But Shendu...Shendu truly is a superior entity. He could squash Valmont like a bug, if he chose to do so. And this truth drives Valmont mad with rage.

While it is unknown how Valmont and Shendu came to meet in the first place, we can certainly hypothesize. Valmont seems to have a peculiar interest in artifacts and magic, particularly that of China.

In his quest for power and riches, Valmont has proven to be quite the control freak. His main weapon is his ability to manipulate people with a collected manner that results in putting them beneath him; thus his opponent begins to feel inferior and doubt himself, and must therefore rely on Valmont. And though manipulation is great responsibility and sometimes even a burden, Valmont is driven to continue by his need to feel superior, to be the best. Part of this need may exist because perhaps deep down he feels worthless and has no sense of pride - a result of child neglect? It has not yet been explained. At any rate, not many have been able to resist him--not many except for Captain Black and later Jackie, thus making them mortal enemies.
