Chapter
2: Dream on.............. with Drell Andrews
Hiya, I’m Drell
Andrews of an archetypal Catholic family. It was Thanksgiving and thanks to
Uncle Dyle, I had to read the grace, aloud. Yikes, Double Yikes and for that
matter Triple Yikes! I have “reading-something-in front-of-others-phobia.”
Forgot again, I had one, Check it out!
“Oh my god,
I’m so nervous mom, I can’t go through with this the way I feel now.”
Thought Drell. I know one thing for sure, the day I was awaiting all my life for
at school was today and today I was not gonna act sick because I already was.
Every time one in a month at least I used to skip school or bunk classes but I
think today was a real exception. Today was my debate competition in, took a lil’
help from my Dad who was a whiz at the subject. The topic was “Why can’t
dreams be true?” the most awaited topic of mine but I regretted, I had
stage-fright.
As I reached
school, Damien and Carla glared at me, no offence my outfit was extremely
painful. My bulgy cargoes had been dipped in mud from last night’s party and
t-shirt had paint stains on it. “Someone’s
ugly here” remarked Carla, “Shut up!” Damien & I both shouted in
chorus. He totally took my side whenever Carla had been fussy about fashion.
Except that, both friends were really impressive.
“Drell, why are you shaking, your turn hasn’t even come
yet.” Said Damien. What would he know how I felt right now. As Ms Amanda
Seratapinki, our English professor strolled through the room, I could sense her
gaze fixed on me, but I was convinced that in front a long jury I couldn’t
even afford to shiver. “Classs! all of you, front and centre to the
quadrangle!” she screamed and all the students ran away out of the class to
the quadrangle. Kevin and all those snobbish (proud of being coolest and smart)
kids who got dumb marks in history covered up on this speech competition by
begging me to write theirs too to which I had to refuse and they downloaded it
off a website.
And then Ms Amanda
shouted into the microphone in her hand.“I will be very glad to call Mr.
Andrews to step up to the plinth and read out his speech for us, kindly.” She
grinned slyly. Carla gave me up a thumbs-up while regular freckle - faced
bullies Jay and Gwenny made their usual hoot.
I began with a burp (sounds too nasty, eh, I know) and then excused
myself and all of a sudden I began with “Someone says that you have to a-a-a-a
drea-a-m and you ha-a-ave.....” I fainted.
Damien, Carla,
Peyush & Allan rushed up from their seats to catch me and surrounded me. It
was Carla’s turn after me and as Zain came up to see what’s happened, she
ran to cover up. After I regained consciousness I excused myself and freshened
up. it was Zoë’s turn and everyone was going to wrap up their speeches when I
asked ms Amanda if I could get another chance, after some reluctance, she
agreed. Then I began,” Someone has said that dreams are another dimension of
life and to prove it’s worth is when you fulfill it in front of
others...................................... and wherever dreams exist it’s
bound for them to come true.” I gulped finally saying it and looked upon the
thoroughly amazed jury.
After about
fifteen minutes the results were announced. Mr. Quentin Corduroy, a sleek and
refined Administrator from the University of Glasgow (one of the juries)
announced the results, “Good evening boys and girls, the results for today’s
speech competition are, Damien
Ashton for the third position, Peyush Kumar for the second and for the first
position I would like to call upon a person, who tried. I would like to
cordially invite Drell Andrews to receive the certificate from the University of
Linguistics.” I could hardly breathe, I was so overjoyed and overwhelmed by
myself. Well why can’t you try, if you dream, the inspiration awaits you
beforehand! So just dream on ................. by the way don’t day dream (you
get a bad rep-U-tation) and don’t forgot to await it’s occurrence in your
real life where there are more problems and challenges to face!
