World Capitals Survey

Mr. Brown wants you to conduct a survey to test a theory. The theory is that most adults who live in the United States do not know the capital cities of non-European countries that are EAST of the Prime Meridian. Your job is to choose 6 capitals cities from countries around the world (except for the U.S.), and survey 6 adults to see if they know the capital cities. Make sure that you choose three cities EAST of the Prime Meridian, and three cities WEST of the Prime Meridian. Make a note of the longitude, the continent, and if the city is EAST or WEST of the Prime Meridian.

RESTRICTIONS: You must choose ONE European city from the EAST and WEST of the Prime Meridian. You may choose the other four cities from Africa, Asia, and South America. Also, make a PREDICTION for how you think your results will turn out for each city. Record the responses on a survey sheet.

Your survey sheet will be set up in Microsoft Excel should look like this:

Use your computer class to print the survey sheets, and make sure you have your name on it. Ask Mr. Brown for permission to survey six teachers. Make sure that you have a watch, note the time, and ask Mr. Brown what time to return to the lab. Stay in the Lower School building, and BE POLITE! You are going to ask teachers: "May I survey you on World Capitals? Do you know the capital of FRANCE?..." Once you have surveyed 6 adults, bring your survey sheets back to computer class. You will use Microsoft Excel to enter the number of YES/NO answers, and graph your data. After you finish your graph, answer these questions: 1. Based on your survey, do you think most adults know capital cities of non-European countries EAST of the Prime Meridian? 2. If people who live in North America do not know the capital cities of non-European countries EAST of the Prime Meridian, how much do you think they know about their people or their government?
