College-Planning Information for Juniors and Seniors

- From Ms. DeHertogh

Junior Class Field Trip

The junior class will be going to Bryant College to attend the ALANA Experience Day on Wednesday, April 4th. The ALANA Experience is an opportunity for juniors to learn about the college search process and meet with financial aid and admissions counselors. In addition, students will sit in on an actual class, tour the campus, and have lunch with Bryant students.

SAT Dates

Seniors' registration forms are in the guidance office along with practice books to help you prepare. Juniors should take the SAT in May or June of 2001. The remaining SAT dates for 2000-2001 are as follows:

Registration Deadline Test Date
March 29 May 5
April 27 June 2

You are allowed to register late for an extra fee.

Financial Aid

Seniors -IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FILL OUT THE FAFSA FINANCIAL AID FORM . It's FREE to apply for financial aid and you are under NO OBLIGATION to attend college just because you applied for financial aid. If you decide not to use the financial aid money to attend college or technical school, that's OK. You can apply again the following year.

Every senior must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. You will need the following information to fill out the FAFSA:

1. A W-2 form for each of the jobs you have held between January 1, 2000-December 31, 2000. W-2 forms are sent to you by the employer.

2. If your W-2 's or your parents' W-2's are not available, we can estimate by using last year's tax forms.

3. If your family receives assistance such as Welfare or SSI, you will need to ask the caseworker for a printout of the benefits you and/or your family received or save a check stub.

Scholarships

Scholarship applications are mailed to me throughout the year. I keep all applications in a box in my office. Many scholarships require essays. If you are interested in any scholarship listed below, see me. Pay attention to deadlines!

Scholarships are free money towards college and help to pay for what federal, state, and institutional grants don't cover. Although many scholarships set specific criteria for qualification such as grade point average or rank in class, others do not. Read the list below very carefully. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by applying!
