Shopping Mall in Thailand Collapsesby Phakamat Rattanakorn 15-5-2003 Five people were seriously injured on May 9, 2003 when part of shopping mall in Thailand collapsed on drinkers at a pub's sidewalk tables. Part of the roof of the Forum Plaza collapsed onto the roof of the pub. Four men and a woman were hospitalised with serious injuries. Witnesses said they heard a loud noise from the top of the five-storey building before the collapse, which occurred during heavy rains. Thirteen motorcycles parked near the main building were also damaged. Authorities declared the shopping mall off-limits for 10 days pending a safety inspection and police investigation. Buildings and structures regularly collapse in Thailand because of shoddy construction as contractors cut corners, corruption resulting in bribed inspectors and generally a laissez-faire attitude applied to construction where many contractors could care less about structural safety.
