At least 20 people were injured when a Bangkok-bound train rammed a car and crashed in Cha-am district on June 14, 2002. The Yala-Bangkok sprinter train was derailed after it slammed into a Toyota car which cut across its path at the Ban Bang Khwai junctions in Cha-am, injuring at least 20 train passengers. All three cars of the train and a section of the track about 100 metres long were badly damaged in the accident.

It took rescue workers over one hour to take the injured to Cha-am Hospital in Phetchaburi and Hua Hin Hospital in Prachuap Khiri Khan. The car driver, Kamol Ngao-rahong, a Rajabhat Institute Chanthaburi student, was obviously quite stupid and he told police he was hit because he failed to stop as the barricade at the train crossing came down.
