weekend in tulear (september 2004)
Sitting in the middle of the road...because we can. We decided to get out of the car half way through the 7-hour ride from Ihosy and to have an impromptu dance party on a two-lane highway. Sitting to my left is Ricard, to my right is Donne the Dentist (I call him that to distinguish him from my other friend Donne). Next to Donne is his wife, Francesca, and furthest right is our driver.
En route to Tulear. Some Malagasy friends of mine invited me on a weekend trip to Tulear in September, and we had a great time. I had a small taste of the wonderful seafood that we would dine on at the coast when we stopped off for lunch on the way there.
Donne and France. They have become two of my closest friends in Ihosy, the big town a few kilometers away from my village. France is still a student...she will begin studying law at the University in Fianarantsoa come January.
We pulled into Tulear after dark, and we were exhausted from the car ride, but that didn't stop us from hitting the clubs upon arrival. Tulear is renowned for its nightlife, and here we are getting down at its most well-known discotheque, the Zaza Club.
...And everyone was kung-fu fighting. I don't remember who had the idea, but we somehow ended up posing for a picture in these ridiculous looking positions. I think we were just deliriously happy to finally be at the beach two days after arriving in Tulear...and to be wading in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Donne wears a lobster. This guy had he cracking up the entire trip...he will do anything to get a laugh.
Pulling in the fish harvest. We observed some local fishermen bringing in their nets and thought we would try a crack at it. We were pretty much incompetent. Best to leave the job to people who know what they are doing...
Donne's family is originally from Tulear, and his parents and eight siblings still live there. So, we visited with them one afternoon and hung out under the shade of a large tree in their courtyard. It is hot as hell in Tulear.
Leaving Tulear after five wonderful days there, we took some pictures of us sitting on the main avenue in town. Here I am, tired and sunburned, but the happiest man alive after our little vacation.
