Mission Statement
I propose to teach an online course that will allow students to take an in-depth look at the phenomenon known as The Beatles. I will  include lesson plans that deal with various curricular areas. I plan to use The Beatles as the subject to teach and review a variety of basic skills.  The students will be able to choose their own path of learning by selecting the types of assignments they would like to complete from a list of possible assignments.
The mission of the online course, The Beatles: Across the Curriculum, is to allow students the opportunity to meet the requirements and standards to earn one credit in Writing I to be used toward graduation in a Florida High School as defined by the Florida Sunshine State Standards for Writing I and described by the Florida Department of Education course outline for Writing I.
This course proposes to teach on online Web based course that will explore the achievements The Beatles made to the humanities and the cultural world by allowing students to investigate materials and activities designed as an impetus for meeting the Writing I objectives.  This course is being presented in this online format because it provides the best method for presenting the proposed activities.  It will also allow students to learn new technological skills in addition to writing skills that will be useful to the students’ in today’s technological society.  It was modeled using the Constructivist learning theory that allows students to select their own path of learning by selecting the types of assignments that work best for their particular learning style.

"The Beatles; poets of a generation; heroes of an era.  Like both poets and heroes they both expressed and reflected the spirit of their time." (1992)
When the Beatles crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1964, they produced a widespread movement in popular music and culture, and the ripple effect of their genius is still prevalent today.  John, Paul, George, and Ringo with their timing, fate, talent and charisma, merged into a tidal wave that resulted in a musical and cultural revolution that would influence the world for generations.  The effect is undeniably relevant. They are among the most revered and historically influential people of the twentieth century.
The Beatles' popularity is a direct result of their music that has withstood the test of time.  When the four members teamed up, little did they know that they would mold a generation.  They became teenage icons but their talent catapulted the group to success.  Their hard work and devotion to their music would make them stand apart and above the rest.  Although there are a number of reasons for their lasting popularity, their contributions as innovators have secured them a place in history. They were the first group of the "British Invasion," and they opened the minds and hearts of Americans to become receptive to other British musical acts.  They paved the way for their colleagues to receive a fair amount of publishing and performance royalties.  They learned to use merchandising to increase their popularity and appeal to mass audiences.  They brought an entirely fresh look to America and wound up dictating the fashion of an era.  With their associates they had a lasting impression on the art world.  Their album cover art would revolutionize the pop-recording industry.  Their association with producer George Martin would have an astounding effect on the sound-recording industry, and new technological advances were made.  Their film and television appearances have captured precious moments in time.  Their influence has lasted and that influence went far beyond music.  They were serious and relevant artists that changed our cultural society in many ways.  The Beatles meant many different things to many different people. Their contributions to the cultural world and the humanities have captivated millions, and their significance requires understanding. Today a new generation of listeners is joining in and appreciating the creative genius of the greatest musical group of all time.
