The Beatles: Across the Curriculum


Learner Behaviors or Characteristics
Learners need to possess certain qualities and characteristics to complete the designed course, The Beatles: Across the Curriculum.  I referred to the book, Principles of Instructional Design (Gagne, Briggs, Wager 1992), in order to develop this phase of the instructional design.

Physiological Characteristics (Characteristics of normal, healthy functioning, motor skills)

  • Learners need to possess visual acuity for reading text on electronic pages and viewing images.

  •  
  • Learners need manual dexterity that will allow them to use their hands to manipulate keys on the keyboard.

  •  
  • Learners need to have eye/hand coordination in order to be able to view the computer screen and manipulate the keyboard simultaneously.

  •  
  • Learners need to possess spatial orientation that will be applied in the design of projects.

  •  
  • Learners need to be able to reflect on previous knowledge stored in their memory and logically organize and process the information retrieved from experiences.
Cognitive Learner Characteristics (Mental procedures and intellectual skills)
  • Learners must be able to read with at least an eighth grade reading level for the learner to be able to understand the textural content that will be presented.

  •  
  • Learners must be able to comprehend what they read with at least an eighth grade reading level.

  •  
  • Learners must be able to write complete, grammatically correct sentences.

  •  
  • Learners must possess a working knowledge of a computer so they may turn the computer on and off, keyboard and mouse usage, and be able to open a browser and access the course.

  •  
  • Learners will either need to be able to type or use a voice recognition program.

  •  
  • Learners will need to know how to perform a point and click action using a computer mouse.

  •  
  • Learners will need to know how to get to an Internet connection, browser, and type a link in the browser.

  •  
  • Learners must be able to use a word processing program and have the knowledge to save information to discs.

  •  
  • Learners must possess organizational skills.

  •  
  • Learners must be able to follow directions.

  •  
  • Learners must be able to submit assignments by having a working knowledge of how to use an E-mail function.
Affective Learner Characteristics (“An internal state that affects an individual’s choice of personal action toward some object, person, or event) (R. M. Gagne, 1985).
 
  • Learners should have an interest in actively participating in an online course.

  •  
  • Learners should have an interest in The Beatles.

  •  
  • Learners should have an interest in learning how to write more effectively.

  •  
  • Learners should be self-motivated to complete all activities.

  •  
  • Learners should be highly motivated to successfully complete all lessons in the course.

  •  
  • Learners should be willing to share their findings with others.


Personal Learner Characteristics (Distinctive individual qualities expressed by physical and mental activities and behaviors)
 

  •  Learners demonstrate a desire to learn.

  •  
  •  Learners are tolerant of all students despite their gender, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.

  •  
  •  Learners are able to work on their own without feeling alienated.

  •  
  •  Learners are equally at ease working in groups.

  •  
  •  Learners offer aid in group learning situations if possible.

Computer Skills
You will need the following computer skills to complete this course.  If you do not possess these skills you will need to obtain these skills on your own to successfully complete this course.
  • 1.  A basic understanding of your computer operating system and software which includes the following concepts:
  • Keyboard and mouse skills
  • Open, size, move and switch windows
  • Use the taskbar (Windows 95, 98) or finder on a MacIntosh computer
  • Copy, cut, paste
  • Saving, opening, moving, deleting files and folders
  • Manipulate graphics and text as required
  • Understanding of WebCT
  • Use word processing program
  • Ability to save work to a floppy disc 
  • Ability to post work to WebCT forum
  • Ability to send and receive E-mail messages
  • Ability to view E-mail attachments

  • Ability to participate in chat sessions
  • 2.  An understanding of basic Internet skills is nessary to be successful.
  • Access the Internet through your own Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Ability to use a Web browser to search the Internet
  • Ability to use a search engine effectively
  • Ability to download a file using a WWW browser

  • Ability to install and execute a downloaded file
