Congratulations to our new elected officers, FC Elect Kent McCoin and VFC Elect George Crouch. I know that Flotilla 12-3 will be in good hands for the upcoming year.
Our Christmas party and Change of Watch will be held on Saturday, December 15th, 6PM at Flotilla Island. A catered dinner will be served. More details will be available at our November meeting.
Does your boat have DEFECTS? Well now there is a pain free way to stay up to date. At no charge, anyone can receive updates on their boats and motors. The National Recall Alert Registry is a universal registration site which allows boat manufactures to locate boat owners about safety recalls. This could also be a point of discussion with a new boater while completing a Safety Check. Just go to boatus.com/recall
Well, the year is closing out fast and we've done a lot of training these past months with a lot of help from Don Davis. Other members also helped out with their vessels for on the water training and 12-3 has new crew & coxswains to start next year. (Photograph of new coxswains courtesy of Ollie Moye.)
I would like to give all a big thanks and keep-up the good work...'cause it sounds like we may be playing a bigger role next year.
Jim & Sharon Fleming along with Bobby & I made a trip down to Georgetown last week to visit Flotilla 12-10. They sure have picked up a lot of new "retired" members from up North. We also got to take a patrol with member Ralph Penevolpe on the ICW after doing some tow hook-ups with the 41' from Station Georgetown. Photographs from the Georgetown patrol as well as the coxswain fish fry are below.
We did get a few odd looks from other vessels passing as we had the 41' in tow behind Ralph's 26' boat. With the reserves on active duty and all of the new seamen at the Station, they needed the practice in stern & along-side hook-ups.
The coastal slave ship (reproduction built in Connecticut) "Amistad" just arrived at Georgetown Landing Marina a couple of days before us, so we took the on board tour on Wednesday....very interesting but a lot of work handling all of those "ropes!!"
At this time there have been six disenrollment letters sent out to members of Flotilla 12-3. One has indicated that he would renew.
I have a couple of prospective members that I havent had a chance to send any information to at this time but will do so shortly.
There has been a problem with communicating with members because of outdated information such as telephone numbers, email, beeper, etc. Each member is obligated to ensuring that their information is correct. I am asking that members send me an email or letter with the following information:
Member Number - this is the number on you identification card.
Name - Last, First, Middle Initial.
Home Address
E-MAIL (If you have one)
Phone Number - Home, Work, Cell, Fax, and Beeper/Pager.
Also, employer, birth place, birth date, next of kin and emergency Contact: Please list as least two contacts with names, addresses, home and work phone numbers.
If you feel you have a medical condition/medication taken that should be known please list these too.
The information given will be on file with the FSO-PS, the Flotilla Commander, Vice Flotilla Commander, FSO-OP and the FSO-IS. The reason Im asking for this information is to update records and to have the information available should a member be on duty not only on Lake Murray but outside of our area such as Charleston or elsewhere in the District/Nation. Coast Guard stations are under tighter security because of the 9/11 incident. It is also for CALL OUT purposes. I would suggest that the member also carry a card with this information in their wallets. Having dog tags with name and member ID number imprinted would be a good idea. These can be ordered through the internet at any army/navy surplus sites.
This information is for the use of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Coast Guard and cannot be disseminated to any outside contacts. Members are protected under the 1974 Privacy Act.
Remember to send in your reports and articles. The deadline is the 10th of each month.
Not much going on this month with VSCs.
We do have a new Commander, and Vice Commander! Congratulations to Kent, and George! I know they will do an outstanding job for us.
Sharon and I had four exciting days in Georgetown with Jim Smith, and Bobbie Buscher. We toured USCG Station Georgetown, and there 41 foot patrol vessel. We attended the monthly meeting of USCGAUX 12-10, did towing exercises with the regulars and their 41.( Now we can say we towed the USCG.)
We did a Patrol up the ICW with a stop at the new Reserve Harbor Marina, which is a brand new Marina on the ICW, and really nice. Our Coxswain, and guide for the day was FSO Member Training, Ralph Penevolpe who has over 30 years with the USCGAUX as Coxswain. He knows the ICW, and waters around Georgetown, and was very informative! Thanks to Ralph, we had a great day on the water!
We want to thank Commander Bill Lyon 12-10 for setting up the Patrol, and inviting us to their monthly meeting, The members welcomed us, and were very gracious!
We Thank Flotilla 12-10, Georgetown!
"Scuttlebutt", Refers to the ships wooden drinking barrel, which was located near a scuttle, or porthole. The idle talk that went on around it gave rise to Scuttlebutt, as gossip. Drinking fountains on Navy, and Coast Guard Vessels are called "Scuttlebutt's" (remember this one Dale?)
