Member Training

Not much has happened in the last 30 days except Bobby & I started Richard Lesnieski crew training on December 1st. We are still waiting for DirauxWest to grade Ron Tvorik's nav-rules test.

I just want to wish all of my fellow flotilla members a "happy holiday" season and wish all that could go to the Division Change of Watch Jan.25 & 26th would go. You get to meet other members from the other four flotillas and exchange ideas & problems.

Well cold weather seems to finally be moving in to our area. Please make sure you have adequate clothing for patrols and SARs during this colder weather.

We are still picking up SARs cases for disabled, aground and lost boaters. I know a number of our vessels are out of the water, but patrols are still benefiting those diehard boaters that are still utilizing the lake. With the water down it is important to watch your water depth.

Several important changes are about to occur with our SAR reports as Group Charleston will be entering our SARs into their system. The key item will be to fill in all the blanks. I will be sending out additional information as it becomes available and scheduling some training time for the January Flotilla meeting.

Have a great Holiday and thanks for all your support this year.

Vessel Examination

The 2002 VSC Decals are now available from DIRAUX, and will be ordered after the Holidays. At this time, the requirements for the VSC Decal remains the same as last year.

The USCG has been taking comments on whether to change federal requirements for PFDs to be worn by all children 13 years and younger on all Vessels. The SC law now requires children 12 years old, and under to wear a PFD on Vessel 16 ft.and under. USCG Approved Inflatable PFDs are now approved for children 12 and under,as long as they are being worn, of the proper size, and are self inflating with a good CO2 cartridge installed.

Remember when the Navy "P" coat was the style some years ago? Everyone wanted one, and there were quite a few imitations on the market, but the "original" Navy "P" coat was the one to have! The "P" COAT was originally made from a heavy, close knit canvas called "P-CANVAS." It was wind resistant and very warm. The wearers called them "P Jackets" or "P coats" after the material they were made of.

Have a safe, MERRY CHRISTMAS, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
