AOL Live Chat with Christopher Gorham, January 26, 2001
TVGLive2: Hi, Chris! Thanks for joining us!
Christopher Gorham: Hi, everybody. Thanks for showing up.
Question: Hi. I am a huge fan. And I must say, you played the part where Harrison was in the hospital most excellently. In light of that, what do you think are some other serious subjects Popular should cover?
Christopher Gorham: Honestly, I think the show -- we're shooting an episode right now with a very serious subject, discrimination. Tonight's show also covers another subject that I can't give away, but it involves Nicole. Actually, I'm anxious for the show to get back to its more comedic roots.
Question: How much do you and your character have in common?
Christopher Gorham: A fair amount, I think. My high school experience was complete different, just cause I went to a performing arts high school. We're both nice guys.
Question: How long does it usually take you guys to film one episode of Popular?
Christopher Gorham: It takes eight days, generally from 12 to 16 hours a day.
Question: Do you and the rest of the cast of "Popular" hang out together off the set?
Christopher Gorham: Not too much. I'm married, so when I have time off from work, I want to spend it with my wife and with friends I don't get to see. But occasionally.
Question: Hi! Where would you like to see your character (Harrison) go during this season?
Christopher Gorham: Paris. LOL.
Question: What has been your favorite episode?
Christopher Gorham: I think my all-time favorite is still Caged. Although I was proud of the Christmas episode this year. I think those are my top two.
Question: Can you tell us about your movie "Eye of the Storm"?
Christopher Gorham: It's an independent film based on a true story about a missionary named John Groberg who went to the island nation of Tonga in the 60s. There is an incredible culture shock when he arrives. He doesn't speak the language. The movie takes place over three years and shows him trying to keep the love of his life close to his heart. It's something you don't see very often -- it's an independent family film. It was a great opportunity. We spend eight weeks on the Cook Islands, on Rarotonga, then two weeks in Auckland, New Zealand.
Question: What's the funniest blooper off or on the set?
Christopher Gorham: This season, about the funniest thing that happened to me -- I was goofing around, and you know how your mom tells you not to rough around indoors. Well, I stood up and got taken down by an open locker. I ripped the hell out of my arm. It was really embarrassing.
Question: What do you think is the biggest message "Popular" sends out to teens?
Christopher Gorham: I think that in your teenage years and in high school, everyone is going through the same things. A lot of universal feelings happen to you when you're that age. Chances are, just about everyone you know is feeling similar. It doesn't mean youre a bad person. Along with a special message each and every week.
Question: What do you like to do for fun?
Christopher Gorham: I like to play basketball, go to movies, read. That kind of stuff. I like to go out to fancy dinners with my lady.
TVGLive2: :)
Question: How do you prepare for your more emotional scenes? The leukemia scenes, for example. Or is that somewhat of a magician's secret?
Christopher Gorham: No secret. It's just hard to describe, cause in the past it's been really difficult for me to cry on cue. It's a real skill that I haven't had. Sara Rue is much better at it than I am. It's just pretending, what would it feel like if this was happening to me? For the leukemia stuff, it was really good writing. That just made it fairly easy. Just pretend.
Question: Who are your role models?
Christopher Gorham: My parents. My wife. Michael Moore, I enjoy.
Question: Do you have any pets?
Christopher Gorham: Yes, we have two dogs. One is a golden retriever and the other is a terrier mix that we rescued from the pound this past year. I'm allergic to cats, or we'd have a cat too.
Question: Hey, Chris! OMG! I luv you sooo much! :) Are you in any upcoming movies other than "The Eye of the Storm"?
Christopher Gorham: Not to my knowledge, but if you see me in any, let me know. You can always go out and rent A Life Less Ordinary, if you really need a film fix.
Question: What are *your* favorite television shows? And do you think that Popular would have been a show that you'd watch if you hadn't been in it? ~Spooky
Christopher Gorham: Well, Spooky, I now have a TiVo that I got for Christmas. On my TV I record The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Oz, I also record The A-Team for nostalgia. I hardly have time to watch them. I also keep track of the UCLA football teams. I also enjoy That 70s Show. As far as Popular, definitely the best show on television.
Question: Will your wife come back to Popular and portray Poppy?
Christopher Gorham: Possibly. She would have come back this season, but she got pregnant somehow.
TVGLive2: ;-)
Christopher Gorham: Even then, she didn't just want to be the only Latina character, but even the only pregnant Latina cheerleader. But it's possible next year. Thanks for asking.
Question: What kind of music do you listen to? ~Faith
Christopher Gorham: All kinds, really. But right now, let's see. I'll tell you what I have in my trailer. Eminem, Radiohead, Limp Bizkit, Dido, I have My Name Is Joe, which I bought cause Mary Cherry calls Harrison Joe. I have Santana, a Pottery Barn compilation. And a Christmas compilation that one of the crew guys put together for us.
Question: Me and my friends like act like we're the popular people, for like instance me and my best friend are Brooke and Sam, and we just wanted to know, if you had to pick -- Sam or Brooke???
Christopher Gorham: If Harrison had to pick -- you'll just have to keep watching, because very soon he does.
Question: If you weren't acting, what do you think you'd be?
Christopher Gorham: Unemployed. I don't know. I never know how to answer that question. I honestly don't know what I would be doing. Work in some part-time job trying to do it, I guess. Maybe go into law school.
Question: Do you have any advice for aspiring actors?
Christopher Gorham: Yeah. I guess, get training. Educate yourself as much as you possibly can. It's hard to act what you don't know. Then at some point, just dive in and give it a shot. If it's your dream and it's something that you feel you need to do, you should go for it.
TVGLive2: Thank you so much, Chris! Looking forward to tonight's ep. Please come back and talk soon!
Christopher Gorham: Thank you so much for showing up. To anyone who was here last time and I couldn't make it, I apologize. Keep watching Popular.
TVGLive2: Bye! And remember to watch tonight's episode of Popular on The WB at 9PM ET!
