A native to canada John grew up with the majority of his young life focusing around hockey. John's brother, Hayden, one year his junior, was also very skilled and together the two of them were on a championship team. One year before John would leave for college, with a full hockey scholarship, an illegal hook by a member f the opposite team  blew out John's right knee.

Of course such a tragedy was devastating to the young superstar, but John got through it by practicing with his brother, who now had to hold the spotlight by himself. John would never play like he did before, but Hayden was always willing to practice for fun.

During John's sophomore year at college studying aviation, Hayden was killed during a playoff game when a super strength mutant checked Hayden through the glass into the stands, he died a few hours later.

John's hatred for the mutant race burned beyond all reason. The night of his brother's burial John got a hold of a shot gun and went looking for the boy. He found him in tears over what had happened, only making John hate him more, he lifted the gun to end his brother's accidental killer, when a man moved between them. A wheel chair bound man stepped between the business of two people he didn't know, and changed John Shepherd's life forever for the better.

Now many years later John has become one of Professor Charles Xavier's best kept secrets, working on a secret project with the boy he helped foster into a man. John has married his college girlfriend and is the owner of a small but profitable airfield in Peacehaven, England.
Unbeknownst to John, he had another brother, a twin. Even more shocking was that they shared a body. The other Shepherd son was the mutant sereal killer, Chimera. John became aware of their bond only after Chimera had taken his anger out on his brother by killing John's wife, Angela Shepherd. Blaming himself for her death he was unable to fight Chimera, and his body was taken over, leaving the psychotic free to roam the streets of London all the time.

Chimera and John were thought to have been one in the same when Excalibur member, Devona, and her ex husband Stuart were out walking. Chimera killed Stuart almost immediately, leaving Devona with his impaled body.

Finally the Excalibur team caught up to Chimera again, the battale began. Most were unable to harm Chimera due to his powers, surpreme strength and the ability to use the powers of the other mutants around him. Wade Gibson was seriously injured, but being arguably the second most powerful telepath in the world, the contact with Chimera allowed him to understand that it wasn't really John, that John was just another casualty. The fight ended when Devona unleashed a fatally powerful kinetic blast, in addition to shooting Chimera in the chest.

Finding himself on the ground, broken and dying Chimera abandoned John, hoping for Devona to finish them off. John saw his friend coming to do just that, but Devona recognized the change, and held him as John appologized, still feeling responsible for all of it. John rejoined his wife, his final word to Devona a name and warning in the same. Sinister.
