Founded in the late 1700's, the Hellfire Club represents society's elite: the extremely wealthy, the powerful, and the famous. The club began as a meeting place for the highest ranks of British society, but what was different about this club was that all royal titles - which were considered by its founders to be an accident of birth - were supplanted by a power hierarchy resembling that of the game of chess.
     These titles were sought after and earned through covert power struggles within the organization. Unlike the pieces of a chessboard, there can be more than one of any of these positions within in the organization. The pawn position is reserved for those within the clubs membership who are being groomed for the 'Inner Circle. Membership to the Hellfire Club is by birthright or by invitation only.
     Amongst its members today are politicians, business leaders, socialites and celebrities from all over the world. Only a few know that the Hellfire Club's current Inner Circle is predominantly comprised of mutants.
     To the outside world, the Hellfire Club appears to be a philanthropic organization, which raises large sums for charity and liberal political lobbies such as the arts. It is still considered the home of the world's social elite, and the club's outward demeanor is that of the finest morals and breeding.
