TEMPTATION

He came into this world so sweet, a blessing wrapped in joy
A gift from God with heart so strong, the perfect golden boy

He grew to manhood swift and sure like the rising of the sun
A burning star to light the way and shine on everyone

One darkened day, the heavens roared and the sky turned twisted gray
Voices beckoned in the distance and the shadows seemed to sway

He looked around and said aloud, “I feel the darkness falling.”
“It’s time for me to be on my way, to pursue my sacred calling.”

No one saw him leave that day, a flicker in the swirling night
A golden glow amidst the gray, a warrior of light

He came upon a wastrel town in a ravaged space and time
With beggars clutching at his feet engulfed in dark design

An ancient demon waited there with crimson burning eyes
A minion from the depths below in malevolent disguise

The demon turned with an evil grin, “So nice to make your acquaintance.”
And the golden boy was taken in by this dark and dreadful presence

No one knows how he betrayed, and became this devil’s toy
As the beautiful shine began to fade on the fair-haired golden boy

His will was weakened day by day.  His light grew slowly dim.
Until his soul had nothing left and no shine was left in him.

The demon smiled his slithering smile. “Relax and go to sleep.”
“Let me hold you in my arms.  I pray your soul to keep.”

Fading now, he drifted off in a nightmare-scape of dreams
Where horrors take you in the dark and no one hears your screams

An angel passing saw the boy ensnared in the devil’s lair
She kissed him on his sacred brow and stroked his golden hair

“Alight,” she whispered in his ear.  “You’ve slept for way too long”
“Free yourself from this demon’s reign.  Uncurl his fettering claws.”

The demon roared with wings of flame.  He would not lose his hold
With drooling fangs and flashing claws he held the young man’s soul

But the golden boy had stirred at last.  He boiled with swirling visions.
No longer would this demon rule and deter him from his mission.

With flashing eyes of cobalt blue and the brightness of the sun
He cast a spell and broke the beast, this perfect son of One

Now prophets sing of evil stayed and angels shout with joy
While the devil in his dark domain still preys for golden boy
