On Being Number
One
Everyone stops
and
everyone stares
With your nose
full
of dust and your head in the air
Maybe they see
what
you want them to see
As you try to
defy
what you can’t help but be
But running so
fast
won’t let you be free
And you’ll
always
be you…to me
Stop shaking
your
head like you think that we’re through
Or pretend
we’re
impressed by the things that you do
Drifting away
like
a cloud in the blue
There are so
many
things that I still wish were true
But it’s
obvious
now.
It’s all about
you
I’m your fall
back
position of last resort
Abstaining,
refraining
my sense of remorse
Watching you
charge
like a run away horse
Tangled in
cobwebs
of freedom of choice
Cringing at the
sound
of your voice
I can tell by
your
tone that you’re coming unglued
Caught up in
the
rush of your own attitude
So quick with
your
thoughts that you can’t see you’re rude
Watch with me
now
and see what you do
Conceited and
heated
in dark Xanadu
Over and over,
it’s
all about you
So push me
aside
when I walk in the door
Like I’m sand
in
the wave of your big ocean roar
Your voice
crying
out
Give me more!
Give me more!
Treating my
life
like your whore
Dripping with
ice
and covered in plastic
No sin is too
great,
no words are too drastic
Your eyes
getting
bigger, your moves getting spastic
Spinning your
light
on the mirror fantastic
Like nuclear
waste,
it all becomes caustic
Heaven and
earth
are spinning askew
The angels have
gathered
to watch what you do
Ruffled they
mumble
then fade in the blue
whispering
words,
the chosen, the few
But no one can
hear
them. It’s all about you.
